MVN RSS — ... fits Neal Huntington's profile -- all power, no control -- but is also seeing interest from the Brewers, Padres, Rangers, Blue Jays and Nationals. While I generally try to link to harder to find stories, I can't pass up two posts from more familiar sources this afternoon just in case one member of the Pirate Revolution community doesn't frequent the Pirate blogosphere as a whole. This excellent Q&A; exchange at the PBC Blog prompted an equally compelling follow-up post from Charlie Wilmoth at Bucs Dugout. ...

Learning from the past
Where Have You Gone, Andy Van Slyke? — ... , the first question asks about the Pirates' recent aim of trading for prospects and whether or not that's a good idea in this market. Dejan uses the question to reanalyze the Jason Bay trade, saying that making the trade crossed a bridge for the Pirates into rebuilding territory that they can't go back over and that he doesn't think it was a bridge that needed to be crossed. Charlie has already written a response in defense of the Bay trade and it's very good. ...

Free agents vs. prospects
Honest Wagner — The Bucco blogosphere has suddenly been festooned with much excellent interesting commentary on a Q+A question about free agents vs. prospects in the current market, and whether the Bay trade was wise. For the record, Rowdy and I both liked the Bay trade at the time. Andy LaRoche has 164 ABs as a Pirate. Sure, those haven't been pretty, but give him a chance at least.

Give Neal Huntington a break
Raise the Jolly Roger — ... The first was Charlie of Bucs Dugout. [He writes] that the Bay trade is being unfairly judged at the moment because of what happened in August, September, and October. Andy LaRoche, Craig Hansen, and Brandon Moss all struggled big-time, Bryan Morris went down to injury, and meanwhile Jason Bay hit the cover off the ball in taking the Red Sox within one game of the World Series. However, on July 31 (trade day), this seemed like a pretty decent deal for the Pirates. That’s not only my opinion; many agreed. The blogs I am mentioning generally liked the deal, the national ...
