In What Universe Is This A Foul? [Ranting Uncontrollably For No Apparent Reason]
I am a firm believer that a basketball game cannot be lost on a single bad call. No, it takes many bad calls, as was proven Thursday in UCLA's 77-67 overtime win over Stanford at Pauley. Particularly galling to Cardinal fans was this apparent block by Lawrence Hill on the Bruins' Nick Collison with 2.5 seconds remaining in regulation. Stanford was up by two at the time, and if the ref ...

Contrary to Popular Belief, Coillison Was Fouled
The Sporting Blog — ... the ball from his hands: Presuming that’s what the official was seeing, it was the correct call. It all depends upon one’s vantage point. That’s why it’s so important for officials to be properly positioned when they make their calls. Which wasn’t the case when a too-far-removed ref called Marquette’s Dominic James for a three-shot foul against Georgetown’s Jonathan Wallace in what became an overtime victory for the Hoyas last weekend. But that’s another argument altogether. Video HT to Deadspin , which had a decidedly different perspective on this play. (Editor's Note: For ...

The Stanford Block/Foul
Storming the Floor — Here is a clip of the now famous Stanford block-foul at the end of the UCLA game last night. Shame Imagine if this is the way that a Duke-UNC game ended? There would be full scale riots in across the state. Maybe it was a good ting that this game ended approximately 1:30 a.m. last night. And you know it's a bad call when the player who got "fouled" admits it was a clean bloc k. The Lopez twins only have Michael Jackson CD's to console them today.....

Last Night's Pac-10 Basketball Round-Up
Your Face is a Sports Blog — - UCLA beat Stanford in overtime 77-67 to win the regular season conference title. Of course, there wouldn't have been an overtime if Darren Collison hadn't have been...touched?...lightly grazed?... by Stanford's Lawrence Hill while driving to the basket down by two at the end of regulation: Which, yeah, it's a terrible call . But keep in mind that a) Stanford blew a big lead in the game and b) how do you not have some sort of way to stop Collison from getting that much penetration at the end of the game to begin with? - Meanwhile, cross-town, USC was doing their best to blow a ...

High Five
Foul Balls — A quick look around the interweb while taking in the soothing tone of Steve Stone's voice on The Score I was watching this game last night, and lemme tell you, Stanford got screwed . [ Deadspin ] I'm not sure how the Cubs would be a surprise, but the other 4 teams are worth taking a look at. [ ...

Conference Tournament Previews: Pac-10
Vegas Watch — ... Washington St. and Stanford have had their struggles, but are both excellent teams. The Cougars lost three consecutive home games in the middle of conference play, but are 6-2 since. The Tree is currently on a two game losing streak, but it's hard to fault them for road losses to UCLA and USC, especially considering the nature of the former defeat. 13-5 in the Pac-10 should not be overlooked, even if their most difficult non-conference opponent was ...
