The International Olympic Committee (IOC) ruled yesterday that Iraq is disqualified from sending athletes to compete in the Beijing Games. The conflict has been brewing for several months and stems from Iraq’s decision to replace the IOC-recognized governing committee with political appointees (not recognized by the IOC).

The biggest blame of all that I have for Iraqi officials is for not going to Lausanne. I went there last fall for a meeting, and it was one of the most beautiful places on Earth, with great scenery, clean streets, and fresh air. The Olympic place, where IOC is located, is awesome, too. They definitely missed out on a chance to get some respite from the hellhole that is Baghdad.

Although Iraqi athletes were banned recently, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has reversed their decision and have ruled that Iraq can participate in the Beijing games. Some last-minute talks between the nation’s official and the IOC in Lausanne, Switzerland are responsible for the change of events.
