According to a press release, the Mariners hired Jack Zduriencik (formerly of the Brewers) as their new GM and executive VP. Zduriencik is credited for the Brewers' run of successful draft picks. Geoff Baker provides his take on the decision at his Seattle Times blog.

I mentioned Zduriencik as a darkhorse candidate after Bavasi was initially fired. One of the craftsmen of the Brewers young core, I think the Mariners made an okay choice, considering most of the really good candidates (see: Hoyer, Forst, DePodesta) either would or could not interview. At the very least I don't think the Mariners will be selecting another closer in the first round anytime soon.
