Stark On Howard & The Broken MLB Draft
The700Level.com - Philly Sports & Minutiae —
Most people don't pay a whole lot of attention to the MLB draft partly because nobody watches college baseball (or high school for that matter) so the common fan is completely unfamiliar with the big names being drafted. This year, however, has one of the biggest talents in quite a while, surefire number one pick Stephen Strasburg. ESPN's Jayson Stark takes a look at what $cott Boras expects $trasburg to $ign for with the Nationals and compares it to current lifetime earnings of stars like former MVP Ryan Howard.
Boras wants Strasburg to sign for something in the $50 million price range and compares that to our favorite first baseman. By the time this ...
Jayson Stark Stupid; MLB Draft Needs To Include Foreign Players
Rake Blog —
Jayson Stark sucks. While this is hardly breaking news, it seemed like an appropriate introduction to today’s diatribe about Mr. Stark’s lengthy column on ESPN.com this afternoon in which Mr. Stark dedicated nearly 2000 words to discussing the problems with Major League Baseball’s player-drafting system but failed to include even one mention of the system’s ...

River Avenue Blues —
We’ve got a small army of links today, so let’s combine them all into one post.
Jonathan Mayo at MLB.com posted his full first round mock draft. He has the Yanks taking Cal’s Brett Jackson, who Baseball America projected the Yanks to take in their first mock draft back in the middle of May. Mayo notes that the Yanks might be a little timid about going after a big bonus guy after losing out on Gerrit Cole last year.
Jason Churchill posted his list of the Top 33 Draft Prospects over at his great site Prospect Insider, while John Sickels posted his top 50 at Minor League Ball.

The Friday Frosty Mug of Root Beer
Brew Crew Ball —
... The MLB draft starts next Tuesday night, and ESPN's Jayson Stark looks at the draft slotting system. There is definitely a problem when large-budget teams can draft and pay over the slot. Stephen Strasburg, who has a 16:1 K:BB ratio this year at San Diego State, will be the number 1 pick and is asking for a contract worth over $50 million. ...
Should you be allowed to trade draft picks?
THE BOOK--Playing The Percentages In Baseball —
Everyone is talking about it. You’ve got Craig, Poz, and Stark.
Suppose you and your 29 buddies are in a league, where you draft rookies. Who would be in the best position to decide whether you are allowed to trade draft picks? Well, you 30 owners, right? So, if 29 of you are for trading, while one of you is not, and the independent smartest man in the world commissioner is not, what is the right answer? The market has spoken: allow trades. Then, you just have to come up with whatever controls you want to ensure that one guy can’t game the system beyond what the majority wants. As long as the ...

The Biz of Baseball :: Business of Sports Network —
... recommendations” is debatable. The 2009 Rule 4 amateur draft begins tomorrow. LWIB saw much discussion about the state of the draft, much of it spurred by widespread speculation concerning the impending demands of consensus #1 pick Stephen Strasburg. Many have reported that agent Scott Boras will demand a record shattering $50 million for Strasburg (no doubt Mr. Boras is fuelling the rumours) but many pundits believe that figure is entirely unrealistic. Jayson Stark: Fifty million bucks. Roll that around your ...
