Perhaps it is jealousy, but Jeter definitely is overrated. His career OPS+ is 121, which is very good, especially for a middle infielder. To contrast, Matt Stairs' OPS+ is 119! [link]

Jeter is a great player.  Offensively.  Defensively, he's terrible and always has been.  Alex Rodriguez is the best shortstop in New York, but because Jeter's so overrated...they need to keep him at shortstop.  Don't get me wrong, he's a great offensive player, but he never should have won one gold glove, much less 3.

It's clear that his "dive" into the stands was completely unnecessary, but the guy plays hard every day and he plays to win.  That's why he's so respected.  Players know that he's gonna be out there, everyday, giving it his all.  Regardless of how good or bad a defensive player he is, he's going to play as hard as he can, day in and day out, without complaint.
