And this video of Mayer calling part of an A's-Red Sox game in Japan will only add to Mayer's viral video cred.  I'm not sure if Mayer's being ironic or actually knows nothing about baseball (I'd guess the former), but one thing's for certain: he's light years better than Joe Morgan. (You have to applaud Dustin Pedroia for going after that third pitch: "blue and yellow" is a total hitter's count.) [Awful Announcing]

Awful Announcing: John Mayer Is My New Favorite Announcer (Video) Bob Gamere, you’re fired. And that happened. I was going to post this saying that this Anonymous guy is my new favorite announcer, but after a little sleuth work (I read the YouTube comments) I found out that it’s musician John Mayer. He is in Japan for some reason, and this is the best call of an at-bat I’ve heard in quite awhile..... “And that happened” is now my new favorite catchphrase. I will use it until it’s no longer funny.

... I couldn’t agree more with Awful Announcing on this video — “And that happened” is the greatest catchphrase I’ve heard from an announcer in quite some time. Indeed, with this video, Mayer proved to the world that he’s better than 90% of the current MLB television announcers — who would honestly prefer listening to Joe Buck’s typical drivel over Mayer proclaiming, “It hits the wall and bounces past the white line; I’m not sure what that means.” ...
