Dave Sheinin reports from Viera that the Nationals have released right-hander John Patterson. Patterson, the Nationals' Opening Day starter in 2007, was limited to 15 starts in 2006 and '07 because of a series of nerve problems in his right arm and elbow. But after surgery last year, he reported to spring training vowing to have a solid season, returning to the form that made him a solid ... [link]

Why? Did his stock drop so low they prefer Odalis Perez over him?

Revise those starting rotation guesstimates!

John Patterson is definitely not going to make the list because the Nationals just released him. Not traded - released! No, it’s not April Fool’s Day yet. Holy cow! Never saw that one coming. I thought we’d be yo-yoed along for his “I’m okay, I’m not feeling quite right, I’m fine, I had an off-day-but-the-arm-is-fine” carousel for-evah! I just watched him throw BP in Ft. Lauderdale in what was the worst of three crappy baseball games I saw while there. He later said he had the flu, but the same flu didn’t hurt Redding’s pitching! I’m surprised to find I ...

Nats Release John Patterson

... UPDATE: The Washington Post's Nationals blog has some inside scoop on the situation and spoke to Patterson after he got the news. Patterson basically feels that he wasn't progressing fast enough to satisfy management, which resulted in his unceremonious firing. Patterson was penciled in to start the second game of the season prior to being released.

BREAKING: Patterson released
Published 3/20/2008 by Will Carroll at Baseball Prospectus: Unfiltered
According to the Washington Post, John Patterson has been released by the Nationals. Patterson hasn’t been able to return to level, but the move came as a surprise to most observers and to Patterson. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see another team quickly move to sign him in hopes that more time gets his velocity back. The Marlins, Cardinals, and Red Sox are possible destinations based on their needs and tendencies.

Nats Release John Patterson — He’s Better than Dan Smith, Right?
Published 3/20/2008 by Alex Remington at Chop-n-Change
So the Washington Nationals just released erstwhile ace John Patterson for “lack of performance.” Hard to fault them for cutting ties with a guy who may realistically never be healthy again. He had a terrific year in 2005, but he’s a 30 year old with one full season in his career — the only season he’s ever pitched more than 100 innings — and fewer innings in the past four years than Mike Hampton.  In 9 spring training innings, he gave up 13 hits and 7 earned runs. (However, he did get 7 strikeouts and surrendered no walks.) ...

The Washington Nationals have released John Patterson.  Patterson has been limited by injury much of his career, but he's shown loads of talent when healthy.  He had a 9-7 record and 3.15 ERA in 2005.  He's had elbow and arm problems since then, but he reported to camp this year healthy. ...

Whoa! This crazy extra news comes from the good blog Nationals Journal, and it is about Tub Master who gets fired! He goes from the Bad Nats today! Nobody has the real story except this blog. It is a shame, but here is goes. Tub Master promises everybody this year that he won't spend all the time in the tub and so much time playing baseball and being a good pitch thrower. Well, it is a scandal because Prince Atlantis and General Boner go into the lockers today and find Tub Master having a secret party with bubble bath. ...

Patterson, for his part, has no ill will toward his former employer, as he's quoted in a post by Washington Post writer Barry Svrluga in Mr. Svrluga's "Nationals Journal" post entitled, "John Patterson Released [With Update]", in which Patterson tells the press: "'I ...

WOW!  Didn’t see that coming. If you were busy watching basketball all day long, John Patterson got the ol’ axe yesterday.  Yes, the presumptive favorite to be the (in-name) #1 starter.  The guy pencilled in for the 2nd game of the year is no longer with the team.
