In a critique of the trade on ESPN.com, Keith Law writes:
“If the Mets get the healthy J.J. Putz - he missed time with rib and elbow injuries in 2008 - they might actually have acquired the best closer of their offseason, one even better than their new closer Francisco Rodriguez.”
According to Law, Putz pitches at 92-95 mph; his fastball has good life, but it plays up because he pairs it with a plus splitter with a hard, late bottom; he pounds the strike zone - he walked fewer batters in 2006 and 2007 combined than K-Rod has thrown in ...

Picking apart the Putz deal
The Hardball Times —
Naturally, there's been a lot written about the Seattle/Cleveland/Mets deal, and I can't do better than Keith Law's overview. The bottom line for Mets' fans is that they acquired a great 'nother closer in Putz (if healthy, he's better than K-Rod) and it may be that the key player they traded away was minor league pitcher Maikel Cleto. ...
What Trading For J.J. Putz Means For The Mets
Amazin' Avenue —
... as he missed time in 2008 with rib cage inflammation and a hyper-extended pitching elbow. His post-injury numbers were very good, though he was plagued by some control problems that were entirely absent during his dominant seasons in 2006 and 2007. We can chalk some of it up to a bit of rust, and even if he has lost some of his command he will still be a great pitcher, if not the utterly sublime reliever he once was.
Want some outside perspective on the deal? Keith Law likes the trade for the Mets. Ditto Dan Szymborski. Matthew Carruth at FanGraphs ...

BASEBALL: Sometimes You Feel Like A Putz
Baseball Crank —
... Keith Law has an overview here of the Putz deal. Putz has great stuff and still had an excellent K rate last season, but really - as we've said so often with the Mets the past few years - it's all about his health. In pure baseball terms, the Mets did give up a lot to get Putz, but a good deal of that was guys like Heilman and Smith who probably needed to be evacuated from Queens. Endy Chavez will be missed for sentimental reasons but is the most replaceable type of outfielder and was barely playing by season's end. The Mets need better bats in the corners, anyway. ...
Mets decline option on Putz
Circling The Bases —
Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for putz.jpg As expected, the Mets have declined their $8.6 million option on J.J. Putz for 2010 by exercising a $1 million buyout . Putz posted a 5.22 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in just 29 games before undergoing right elbow surgery in June. He was shut down for good after suffering a strained right forearm during a rehab assignment in August. Omar Minaya made upgrading the bullpen his top priority last winter, first inking Francisco Rodriguez to a three-year, $37 million contract in December, then swiftly dealing for Putz, Sean Green and Jeremy Reed. Minaya was lauded at the time , but Putz looked like damaged ...
