... Bill Reiter of the KANSAS CITY STAR talked to the Alabama coach about the events that happened on that day in 1970. Saban was a defensive back on the Golden Flashes football team - and was at the school when the famous shots were fired. As the Vietnam war raged on in Southeast Asia, student and non-student organizers were calling for an anti-war rally to be held on the Kent State campus for Monday, May 4. In the previous days, protesters had burned down the school’s ROTC headquarters and gotten into clashes with police. The university & National Guard forbade the rally. ...

Bill Reiter does a fantastic job of exploring the anniversary of the Kent State shootings from the perspectives of Nick Saban and Gary Pinkel, who played for Kent State and lived in the area, respectively, when the shootings occurred. Maybe you don't have a whole lot of interest in either of those figures, but the story is well worth a read from a historical perspective. ...
