Cincinnati Bengals troubled linebacker Odell Thurman has officially been reinstated into the league by Commissioner Roger Goodell . Thurman missed the past two seasons due to violations of the league’s substance abuse policy, as reported by John Clayton of ESPN.com : "Odell has met the NFL's conditions for reinstatement and has been added to our offseason roster," Bengals head coach ...The Tar Heels and the 2008 NFL Draft: Kentwan Balmer

As the weekend approaches and the National Football League Draft arrives it is time (and maybe I am a bit late, to be honest) to think about the future for some of the Tar Heels that are heading to the next level.49ers address needs by drafting Balmer, Rachal on first day

Some draft news of the good kind. UNC DT Kentwan Balmer was selected 29th by the San Fransico 49ers. Balmer really came on during his senior season and ended up being 2nd team All-ACC finishing with 59 tackles and three sacks. This also helps in terms of recruting, especially when you consider Balmer went from off the radar to a first round pick in one year under Butch Davis.2008 NFL Draft: Scout's Inc. take on 49ers selections

I have to be honest. While I've read about both Kentwan Balmer and Chilo Rachal, I have plenty to learn about them before safely being able to see what they bring to the table for the 49ers. Later this week the folks from Conquest Chronicles , our USC blog, will have insight on Chilo Rachal. Additionally, I hope to get some more info on Kentwan Balmer from the folks at ...Niners' picks show faith in Martz

Posted by ESPN.com's Mike Sando The 49ers went defense in the first round with Kentwan Balmer. The pick fits into general manager Scot McCloughan's overall plan to strengthen the defensive front. Justin Smith was a big part of that equation. Choosing Balmer instead of an offensive player also shows, again, how much confidence the 49ers have in offensive coordinator Mike Martz. It looks like day one of the 2008 NFL Draft is in the books for the 49ers, unless they decide to trade up into the second. The 49ers finished the day by adding to their lines on both sides of the ball. They selected defensive end Kentwan Balmer at 29 and offensive lineman Chilo Rachal at 39. Both aren’t big name picks, at least to the fans who were expecting maybe a Quentin Groves, ...2008 NFL Draft: 1.29 Kentwan Balmer, DT, San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers wanted to beef up the middle and they found the best 3-4 tackle prospect on the board in UNC’s Kentwan Balmer . Balmer is 308 pounds and a space eater; exactly the kind of player the 49ers want to have in their DT rotation. He failed to make a major impact in his early college years, but came on strong in 2007. His status as a potential “one year wonder” is what ...2008 NFL Draft: 49ers select Kentwan Balmer, DT, North Carolina and Chilo Rachal, OG, USC

I'm back and the 49ers have made some interesting picks on day 1 of the 2008 NFL Draft. The comments are filling up in the open thread, so consider this a new thread for the remainder of the day for all draft discussion. I'll have more complete thoughts after I get a little research done, but off the top of my head, I'm certainly intrigued by these picks. Balmer was ...Perfect timing for draft

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley I thought the Seahawks might change their strategy and go for the tight end, but they went with the best player available in USC defensive end Lawrence Jackson. The 49ers just took the third best defensive tackle in this draft, Kentwan Balmer out of North Carolina. I know the organization really liked Gosder Cherilus, but he was long gone. I'm sure ...Pick #29 - San Francisco 49ers - Kentwan Balmer, DE, North Carolina

The 49ers offense was easily the most pathetic in the NFL last year. So what do they do? They draft a defensive lineman. I think Steve Young did make a good point though. There is a lot of pressure on Mike Nolan to make the playoffs this year, and the offense is very far away from a playoff unit. So the quickest way he could possibly get the team in would be to further bolster the defense,Pick 29-San Francisco 49ers: Kentwan Balmer

Balmer is a good, not great value where the 49ers pick, but he does fill a sizable hole that was created when Marques Douglas left for Tampa Bay. The 49ers, as Rich Eisen mentioned, continue to build through the Senior Bowl class, and that is a very, very sound draft strategy worthy of five process points. 49ers: 5 points Trippiedi’s Best Available Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville ...Profile: Kentwan Balmer

The 49ers wasted no time in making their pick at 29. They only used two and a half minutes to decide that defensive end Kentwan Balmer was their man. Honestly I was nervous about this pick. I like the outcome. You build in the trenches and Balmer will be an excellent fit alongside Justin Smith. It's not a home run. I wanted Sweed but we do have the 39th pick to take a WR. It's a double but I like it. Makes the defense a lot better.29. San Francisco 49ers Pick Kentwan Balmer, DE, North Carolina in NFL Draft

I talked to North Carolina defensive end Kentwan Balmer at the scouting combine and came away liking him a lot, and I like the value of picking him with the 29th selection in the first round a lot. This was a very good pick for the 49ers. Some people think the fact that Balmer only had one good season (his senior year) in college as a problem, but I tend to view Balmer's career in the ...Moving back makes sense for Seattle

Posted by ESPN.com's Mike Sando The Seahawks have to like their options at No. 25. Several of their top defensive players remain on the board, including Phillip Merling, Kentwan Balmer and Lawrence Campbell. They could take one of them here or trade back and take one of them later. This scenario sets up nicely for Seattle if the team can find a trading partner.Round 2 Options

Inside the Panthers ideas . The trade up for Gosder Cherilus isn’t possible, he went #17 to the Lions. They could still trade up for Kenny Phillips or Kentwan Balmer or Phillip Merlin or a QB. If they stay in the 2nd, I like Trevor Laws or Tyrell Johnson or Sam Baker . I guess Duane Brown if they’re all gone, or maybe a DE like Calais Campbell or Lawrence Jackson . ...I May Be Wrong….

Since about the time the Cowboys imploded against the Giants in the NFC Divisional game, the talk has been primarily about two things: PACMAN FEVER! and Darren McFadden .
