Kobe Would Take $50 Mil. To Play In Italy
If Italy comes knocking with big money next summer, the NBA could lose its biggest star in Kobe Bryant. “I’d go. I’d probably go,” said Bryant, during a USA Basketball press conference on Friday morning. “Like Milan or something like that, where I grew up or something like that… Peace out.” Bryant continued: “Do you know any reasonable person that would turn down 50 (million dollars)?”

The question should be "Who wouldn't take 50 million to play overseas?"

If anyone, Kobe should make the big dollars, but no one is worth $50 (and no one can afford to pay someone that much, right?).

Kobe is worth whatever someone is willing to pay.  It's easy to throw out the numbers, "I'd pay Deron Williams $100 million to play for the Pygmy National Team."  But when it comes right down to it, I doubt these foreign basketball teams will be able to pony up the dough.  It might make for great PR, but I can't imagine a scenario where it's profitable in the long run, i.e., more than 1 year.

Those would have to be some pretty hefty-priced tickets to make that money back... I don't that any financial model could support that sort of investment!

The interesting thing about this is soon you'll start seeing a lot of guys saying they'd go (even if they really don't want to) for leverage in contract negotiations.

Rumors and Free Agent Updates - Kobe and LeBron to Europe Edition
LOY's PLACE a celtics green blog — ... Not only is LeBron talking Europe but now, Kobe Bryant has said that he would probably leave the NBA to play in Italy if they offered him in the area of $50 million a year. Kobe spent a large part of his childhood growing up in Italy while his father played professional basketball there and speaks fluent Italian. In 1999, he also acquired a 50 percent ownership of the Olimpia Milano of the Italian Professional Basketball League. Does that mean that he could offer himself a contract? Anyway, he would love to play in Italy and no NBA team could match that kind of money. Kobe ...

LeBron, Kobe, Europe and the NBA's Future
Dan Shanoff — Just testing a theory: So there's the LeBron/$50M/Greece meme. Now the Kobe/$50M/Italy meme (and a lot more plausible). It's not a joke; the idea of a true NBA superstar bolting for Europe (or China) WILL become a reality in the next few years. And the current NBA salary structure can't deal with it. I wonder if the NBA will be forced to adopt an MLS-style "Beckham Rule," where one player (presumably the superstar) can be signed for any amount of money and would not count against the team's cap. Sure, that favors the free-spending ...
