So was Game 1 a monumental Spurs meltdown or an extraordinary Lakers comeback? Call it a meltback – one part meltdown, one part comeback. To pull off such a rally, in a tone-setting game of this magnitude, the Lakers definitely needed some help. Los Angeles got it in the fourth quarter when a tiring Spurs squad went 3 of 21 from the floor, including 1 of 9 from beyond the arc.David Friedman posted 5/22/2008 from 20secondtimeout.blogspot.com
Kobe Bryant scored 25 second half points as the Lakers came back from a 65-45 third quarter deficit to beat the Spurs 89-85. Tim Duncan repeatedly trapped Bryant on pick and roll only to see Bryant lob passes over his head to Pau Gasol for easy hoops; in last year's Finals, Duncan played off of the weak-shooting LeBron James and denied him the opportunity to make such passes.MrThell posted 5/22/2008 from www.emptythebench.com
This is why we watch. When Tim Duncan made a 7-foot hook shot to put the defending champions up by 20 (65-45) with just under 6 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, all looked lost: the game, the series, and the Lakers season. I felt sick to my stomach. There was no way, no way, that they could possibly squander such a commanding advantage, right? Cue Kobe Bean Bryant.Cuzoogle found this 5/22/2008 on www.bustedcoverage.com

The Lakers had fallen behind early in their opening game against the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals. The Spurs looked like champions and the Lakers looked like they were in a championship training class. As most people know, I have recommended on a few occasions that the Lakers overplay the Spurs stars Ginobli and Parker to their strong hands and force them to go the other way.
