... For some reason, the Yanks seem to be interested in Jason Lane as a potential first base solution. Lane, 31, is a career NLer with an offensive line of .241/.314/.457 and one good season under his belt. He’s also played a grand total of four career games at first base. Why bother? ...

... The NY Post is reporting that the Yanks are interested in Jason Lane! They would like to sign him to compete for playing time at first base with Wilson Betemit and Shelly Duncan! Lane has been an outfielder most of his career! So he would have to learn to play first on the fly! But the Yanks think he'll be a quick study! His career OBP is .314! He has not demonstrated any noticeable platoon split tendencies! He is 31! ...
The answer at first is ... Jason Lane?!

The Post reports that the Yanks are considering former Houston Astro and brief San Diego Padre Jason Lane for the (let's call it..."vacant-ish") first base position. Or, in other words, three in-house options later (Shelley Duncan, Giambi, and Wilson Betemit), and Brian Cashman still doesn't like what he has. By the way, Lane has played just four games in his career at first base. Seriously. He's an outfielder. That the Yanks are considering for first base. Awesome. Also, we'll just throw this stat out there: since batting .267 and hitting 26 homers in 2005 for the Astros ...

The New York Post is reporting that the New York Yankees may look to add former Astro and Padre Jason Lane to their 2008 1st base mix.
Lane, 31, was recently not-tendered by the Padres after hitting .175 with 8 homers , 27 RBIs and a miserable .254 OBP last season for the ‘Stros (68 games) and Padres (acquired in September, but only played in 3 games for San Diego).
Although he’s only appeared at 1st base four times in his six year Major League career, that is the position the Yankees would most likely have Lane play. The righty would ...

... in bringing him in with a move to 1st Base. Lane, once a prized prospect in the Astros organization, was non-tendered in December after a poor showing with the Padres. The 31-yr old hit just .178 with 8 HR and 27 RBI in 71 games. He had his best season for the Astros in 2005 when he hit .267-26-78. Lane turned heads at Single- and Double-A levels in 2000 and 2001, when he hit .299-23-104 and .316-38-124. But that success has not translated to the majors. Source
Yankees sign Lane

Earlier today, the Post reported that the Yankees were looking at possibly signing outfielder Jason Lane. Tonight, the Yankees signed Lane to a minor-league contract, according to Brian Cashman on YES (via Peter Abraham). Though Lane is a career outfielder, the Yankees believe he can play first even though he has only played four career games there. After hitting 26 home runs in 2005, Lane has struggled over the last two seasons. He hit 15 home runs, but only hit .201 in 2006. He then hit .175 last season in 71 ...
