Winter Classic Destinations
Kuklas Korner —
from Michael Buteau at Bloomberg,
The Las Vegas Strip, Yankee Stadium and California’s Rose Bowl are on the list of potential sites for the National Hockey League’s annual outdoor game, NHL Chief Operating Officer John Collins said.
The league is evaluating potential locations of future outdoor games two weeks after this season’s edition, between the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field on Jan. 1, drew the highest television ratings for the NHL in 34 years.
“This is really kind of becoming a destination event for hockey fans, but also sports fans,” Collins said in a telephone ...
Afternoon Delight: Winter Wednesday
IllegalCurve.com —
Does the NHL do enough to reach out to black fans? (H/T, Kukla) Fair question, but I don’t think the fans need to be broken down into ethnic groups. A fan is a fan, period.
Curtis Sanford looks to be the odd man out in Vancouver. Seems a likely candidate to get picked up.
More potential Winter Classic venues. SoCal would be nice!

Drunk on success, NHL floats Rose Bowl, Vegas Winter Classics
Puck Daddy —
There's something rather wonderful about the NHL actually exhibiting some semblance of a pimp hand for once, rather than getting smacked around by television or advertisers. The success of the Winter Classic has given the League some swagger, which in turn has enabled the NHL to start expanding its horizons for its New Year's Day event. Like bringing an outdoor hockey game to such wintery locales as Las Vegas or Pasadena, for example. NHL COO John Collins spoke with Bloomberg News about future editions of the Winter Classic, and many of the usual suspects were identified: Boston, New York, Minnesota, Penn State, ...
NHL Eyeing Vegas Strip, Rose Bowl For Games
SPORTSbyBROOKS —
With the last few Winter Classics being such huge successes, BLOOMBERG is reporting that the NHL is looking at venues for future outdoor games that are even less traditional than Wrigley Field. Just how “outside the box” is the NHL thinking for its outdoor game? How about holding the game on the Las Vegas Strip or the Rose Bowl ...
NHL looks to play outdoors in Vegas, baby! FHF road trip being planned
Four Habs Fans —
According to NHL COO John Collins, Las Vegas is being considered as one possibility for the next "Winter" Classic. The game would actually be played on the Strip. While the FHF tend to disagree about whether playing in the Big Owe is a good idea or not, I think we can all get behind this one. You know, assuming the Vegas Pin-Ups pictured above show up. And strippers. And hookers. And meth. Can you get all that stuff in Vegas? Party time! (lap dance to SportsbyBrooks via With Leather)
Las Vegas, Rose Bowl, NYC May Host 2010 NHL Winter Classic
Total Pro Sports —
Total Pro Sports - Reports have surfaced that the NHL's Chief Operating Officer John Collins has named the Rose Bowl in California, the New Yankee Stadium in New York and the Las Vegas Strip as potential 2010 locations for the NHL Winter Classic or otherwise known as the outdoors game.
It's great to see the NHL making this game into a yearly event. This past Winter Classic held in Chicago, between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field had great success both in the city and on the television.
“This is really kind of becoming a destination event for hockey fans, but also ...
Say, let’s play hockey where it’s hot as balls
The Two-Line Pass —
So yesterday, NHL COO John Collins was interviewed by Bloomberg News about the possibile locations of future Winter Classics. He threw out the usual, standard-fare options that would be great (Fenway, Yankee Stadium, Penn State). Everyone would love to see outdoor games in those cities. It would be awesome.
But then the interview headed to Weirdsville in a goddamn hurry.
NHL representatives recently visited Las Vegas in part to gauge the feasibility of staging a Jan. 1 game on Las Vegas Boulevard South, the area known as “the Strip,” Collins said.
“Logistically, it could happen,” he said.
Could it? Could ...
