Padres Might Promote Pitching Prospect
FanHouse — by Matt Snyder Filed under: Padres, NL West, Minor LeaguesIt's been quite the whirlwind season for Mat Latos, the top pitching prospect in the San Diego Padres' system. He began all the way down in low-A ball with the Fort Wayne Wizards -- which is three full levels from the major leagues. After dominating for 25 1/3 innings (3-0, 0.36 ERA, 27 strikeouts, 3 walks), he bypassed Class-A-Advanced and went straight to Double-A. For Double-A San Antonio, things weren't much different for the 21-year-old right-hander, as he compiled a 5-1 record with a 1.91 ERA and 46 strikeouts to only 9 walks. It now appears the spotless inning Latos threw ...

The call-up? Mat Latos coming soon
MVN RSS — MLB.com reports that the San Diego Padres are expected to call up top pitching prospect Mat Latos, perhaps by this weekend.  Latos has impressed in his 9 starts at AA this season compiling a 1.91 ERA, 0.87 WHIP with a .194 BAA.  His K/BB rate is a stellar 5.11 with a 8.81 K/9 and 1.72 BB/9.  Latos features a fastball that can routinely sit in mid 90's while topping out at 96-97 mph.  He also throws a curve/slider and developing changeup, though he's mostly fastball-slider/curve at this point. Run support will be hard to come by with the ...

Calling on Latos
Friar Forecast — by Daniel Gettinger Corey Brock is reporting that the Padres are likely to call up pitcher Mat Latos “this weekend for a start against the Rockies at PETCO Park.”  Latos has dominated minor league pitchers this season.  In 47 AA innings, he has 46 strikeouts to only 9 walks.  He has not yet allowed a homerun.  Stats aside, while he may be close to ready to face major league batters, I am indifferent about this move. Because Latos has thrown only 56 innings in each of his past 2 seasons, a Latos call-up is likely to be short lived.  He has already thrown 72 innings this season, and assuming the Padres will ...

Closing Time: Moyer owns Fish (again), Harden rebounds, trades rumored, injuries updated
Roto Arcade — And we're back, gamers. Mr. Pianowski can't be with us tonight because he still hasn't returned from the ESPYs. Dude got the gift bag and took off. Never made it to the red carpet. Awkward, since he was supposed to present with Shane Mosley and Sue Bird. He was a shuffleboard nominee, too. Until Scott surfaces, I'll be your guide. Let's get to it. There are few obvious reasons to own Jamie Moyer in fantasy leagues, and we are not prepared to endorse him now. He's on the wrong side of 35 40 45, his ERA is 5.58 and his K/9 is 5.05. But on a night that lacked much actionable fantasy news, it's tough not to ...

Latos to Start In San Diego on Sunday
Baseball in Fort Wayne — Tomorrow, Mat Latos will make his Major League debut when he takes the mound for the San Diego Padres against the Colorado Rackies. When he does so, he will have gone from A-Ball to the Majors is what amounts to half a season. Granted, this was not his first year in A-ball: He made his professional debut with the short-season Single-A Eugene Emeralds in 2007, going 1-4 with a 3.83 ERA, although he struck out 74 in 56 1/3 innings. Latos was limited to 56 innings last season with three low Single-A and Rookie teams due to spending three months on the disabled list with a sore shoulder. After spending time in the Padres’ major league camp this spring, Latos’start of the ...

Closing Time: Mat Latos fastballs will one day power San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter
Roto Arcade — In his major league debut against Colorado, premiere Padres prospect Mat Latos bedazzled several Rockies hitter, pounding the strike-zone with persistent 94-98 mph gas. Limited to just 75 pitches, he tossed four strong innings, yielding two runs on three hits. He also logged a dynamite 4:1 K:BB split. Scouts have marveled about his hard-cutting mid-90s fastball. Today, his four-seamer was occasionally overpowering. His fierce slider and straight change, a pitch he worked tirelessly mastering this past spring, were also effective. Outside leaving a fastball up against Ian Stewart, his location was very impressive.  Mentally, insiders ...
