OK. In case you were wondering why the Leafs are such a mess, here is a nice example of how things roll in Toronto: Fire your coach (some people call him Maurice). Float a name as a possible GM (David Nonis, fresh off of his victorious tour through Vancouver). Float another name (Brian Burke of the Ducks), who'll replace the previous name, when the third name's contract expires.  ...

Maple Leafs rumor mill churns out some lunacy
Puck Daddy — ... former agent/general manager in Phoenix Mike Barnett would be the GM; partially so Gretzky can be closer to his father. Again, we claim no inside knowledge on this or any other facet of the Leafs' managerial search; we just find it interesting that this Gretzky rumour seems to be bubbling under the surface and has yet to be addressed by the MSM. On the coaching front, there are going to be many names floated -- Denver's talking about Coach Q heading to T.O. -- but Steven Ovadia had a great take on this and other NHL vacancies behind the pine: ...

Leafs Fire Coach Paul Maurice
The Puck Stops Here — ... a general manager in place. A permanent general manager. Not an interim GM who is looking to hire his replacement. So, Cliff Fletcher has to make these decisions which would be better made by the next GM, which for some reason, the Leafs have yet to hire. Fletcher decided (partially) on the coach question. He fired Paul Maurice. That is not really a surprising move given the Leafs season, but it is one that would have been better left for the permanent GM.
