The Passing of a Legend
Doubt About It —
Myron Cope: dead at 79. It is easy to forget how definitively "Pittsburgh" Myron Cope was. He graduated from Allderdice, then the University of Pittsburgh, and even worked his first job (I believe) in Erie. It is also easy to forget that the man used to be able to put the pen to the page damn well, and served as a noted freelancer for Sports Illustrated. ...

... will be well known to you. A legendary Pittsburgh sportscaster, he was the color commentator for Steeler the games for over 35 years before his retirement in 2005. He also invented the “Terrible Towel” of which I have many. Today, he passed away at the age of 79. ...

The Bucs face the Phillies in the real spring opener tomorrow, with Tom Gorzelanny facing Kyle Kendrick (who thought he was headed to Japan a few weeks ago..). Sadly, Myron Cope died today. RIP to a Pittsburgh legend who was a great announcer to listen to and an ...
Myron Cope, 1929-2008
SPORTS COUCH POTATO —
... as a "yoi," Cope is best known for his creation of the Terrible Towel, the yellow cloth twirled by fans as a good-luck charm at Steelers games since the mid-1970s. The towel has raised millions of dollars for charity and is displayed at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
"His creation of the Terrible Towel has developed into a worldwide symbol that is synonymous with Steelers football," Steelers chairman Dan Rooney said Wednesday.

Uni Watch Profiles: Rob Ullman
Uni Watch —
... (with thanks to Jameson Costello). … Steelers broadcaster Myron Cope, inventor of the Terrible Towel, died yesterday. A memorial helmet decal seems likely, although I’m hoping for a towel-shaped jersey patch with “Myron” in stencil lettering (or, really, anything involving the word, “Myron,” which would be the single greatest word to adorn an NFL uni in league history). … The ...
