Leyland supervised a roughly 10-minute pregame drill in which Cabrera, positioned at first, took 35 throws generated by a machine placed at second base. Leyland, who put the balls into the machine, made the throws go high and low to first and to each side of the bag. The Tigers manager said he'd be ... [link]

I’m going to hit eventually, so why do I have to do it this week? You know what, if I do hit 500 I’m still going to have to hit 497 (which he did), 498 and 499. He threw them a few curves

It took Tim Wakefield nine pitches to retire the Tigers' first batter, Curtis Granderson, who grounded to the shortstop. It took just 89 more for Wakefield to get through the next 26 batters.
