Leyland Goes Off. At Last.

If you’ve been waiting for Jim Leyland to blow his top, today’s your lucky day.
Here’s a taste:
Jason Grilli isn’t here any longer because Jason Grilli didn’t pitch good under pressure situations and didn’t pitch very well in Detroit.
Enjoy.
Update: Listen to the diatribe on the WXYT site here. Look for the “Audio” sidebar on the right.
JIM LEYLAND UNLEASHES F BOMB TIRADE

... ugly has it gotten from the Tigers? Well, now manager Jim Leyland feels obligated to respond to comments former Tigers pitcher Jason Grilli made. The comments seen below reference first basement Sean Casey whom the Tigers decided not to re-sign before this year. “It seems like they kind of broke up our team chemistry when they got rid of Sean Casey and good people like that. You wanted guys like that around.” LINK When asked about those comments today while talking to reporters, Jim Leyland ...

... about the Tigers having poor chemistry and Jim Leyland fired back with some explitives . It’d be nice if the team could use this to get a charge. Tomorrow, it’ll be Kenny Rogers going up against Jarrod Washburn. It’s bad when you have a guy like Washburn with around a 5.50 ERA and your starter has an ERA over one point higher. Hopefully Kenny can find his form tomorrow night. Post a comment Name:(required) Email (will not be published):(required) Website:

“If the players want to play games in the press, I’ll play games in the press. And it won’t be pretty.” (audio, 97.1 The Ticket)
Presumably, Detroit’s chain-smoking, thoroughbred racing enthusiast/manager was in a brighter mood after tonight’s game against Seattle, in which the visitors’ Carlos Silva was chased (4 IP, 9 hits, 7 earned runs) and designate mop-up man Cha Seung Baek allowed home runs to Magglio Ordonez, Edgar Renteria and Curtis Granderson.

... , and that exasperation apparently grew when ex-Tiger Jason Grilli said some of the team's offseason moves -- such as the jettisoning of Sean Casey -- "broke up our team chemistry". Leyland fired back at Grilli's seemingly innocuous remarks, basically telling him to mind his own business and worry about himself. (Detroit Free Press) "You’ve got to be (kidding) me," said Leyland. "We lost Sean Casey. I mean, please. Come on . . . I miss Sean Casey. But Sean Casey has nothing to do with the fact that the Tigers are where we’re at.” ...
Morning Juice: Jose Contreras repping Cuba in best way
Published 5/21/2008 at Big League Stew
This and every weekday a.m., let's rise and shine together with the most recent and decent major league happenings. Today's Roll Call starts in the Comiskey Park area of Chicago, home through the years to some great Cuban athletes, including Minnie Minoso, El Duque and Jose Contreras. Contreras led the White Sox to their sixth straight win, against Cleveland, allowing a run over six innings. Contreras, who has a 2.44 ERA in his past eight starts, handles adversity and acts as a proud symbol for his country much differently than did another famous emigre (albeit a fictional ...

... when Detroit nearly pulled to .500 after its 2-10 start this season but he was traded to the Colorado Rockies. His recent comments about Detroit letting Sean Casey leave via free agency after the 2007 season should have been kept to himself. It's understandable he was simply answering a question from a Rockies reporter, but to get into somewhat detail like he did served no purpose. Unless, of course, he wanted to fire up Tigers manager Jim Leyland. Leyland's response , while somewhat warranted, seemed over-the-top. “Jason Grilli ought to just worry about Colorado.“Jason ...

Even when something good happens, we are quickly reminded that this just isn’t our year.
MVP: Jason Grilli
Grilli gets the honors for three reasons.
1) For taking the ball 12 times, striking out 17 batters in 15 1/3 innings, while posting a respectable 3.52 ERA
2) For his comments that made grumpy Grandpa Jim Leyland soil his depends.
