... Madden 09 seems to agree with that assessment of the Lions running back situation as Smith is rated a 79 and Bell is only a 78. That is fairly accurate I guess. What's not, though, is Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson being rated a 92. On top of that, Shaun McDonald got an 87 and Brian Calhoun a 95 as the third-down running back. The defense isn't too bad as Ernie Sims got a 94. Then again, they gave Chuck Darby an 83, weakening the credibility of the ratings even more. ...

It's time for fanboys to pitch a fit now that the Madden 09 team and individual ratings are out, thanks to Pasta Padre (via Shutdown Corner). These ratings offer the best of both worlds: they're effectively early power rankings for sensitive people to piss and moan about and they actually have a bearing on a game you'll spend far too much time playing. Overall, these seem to be rather fair to McFadden, although his ability to catch out of the backfield was part of the reason he was considered such a hight pick, so 78 seems a bit low on the catching department. We discussed Tarvaris Jackson’s low Madden rating (79) a couple days ago, but much more detailed ratings have been unveiled: Adrian is a 95 overall, while Chester is an 88, Sidney is an 83, Bernard is an 85, Hutch is a 98, and Bryant “Can You Please Direct Me To The Nearest Heavy Pole?” McKinnie is a 96.
There’s little doubt that EA Sports is overrating McKinnie, but otherwise, I think their rankings of the Vikings’ key offensive players hit the mark.

Carson Palmer (96) and Chad Johnson (97) are the team's best offensive players (ummm, duh?). T.J. Houshmandazadeh (95) and Willie Anderson (92) round out players that scored a "90" or higher.
