John Maine became the first New York Mets starter this year to reach the eighth inning, taking a shutout into the ninth Wednesday during a 12-1 rout of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Brad Penny. Maine (4-2) hit a two-run single and was two outs from his third shutout and complete game in the majors when Matt Kemp hit an RBI single, extending his hitting streak to 12 games.

The Dodgers disabled
Esteban Loiaza after today's game, and there is some talk
that Clayton Kershaw may be the one to replace him, if Yhency
Brazoban doesn't beat him to the bigs first. The acid test will
come May 17, when the Dodgers will first need a fifth starter,
in their series against the Angels.
Howie Kendrick will not return to the Angels until next week because of a setback in his rehab. Kendrick did not appear in tonight's Rancho/Inland Empire game.
