It's looking more and more as if John Maine's injured
shoulder is going to give out before he voluntarily calls it quits for this season. Maine was so determined to make Saturday's start against the Astros that he received a cortisone shot in the back of his shoulder Thursday, then didn't pick up a baseball again until the day of the game.

Prior to Sunday’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that while John Maine is tentatively schedule to make his next start, he could be shut down for the remainder of the season if the team does not like what it sees in Maine’s throwing session later this week.
According to Manuel, either way, Maine will need off-season surgery to repair a bone spur in his shoulder.
In Newsday, David Lennon reports that Maine had a cortisone shot on Thursday, but it did little to relieve the pain.
