Malone inks seven year deal with Lightning Links6
Ryan Malone has agreed to a seven year, $31.5 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Malone, who would have drawn considerable interest from around the NHL as an unrestricted free agent, will earn between $7 and $8 million in each of the first two years of the deal. Tampa Bay traded a third-round draft pick in 2009 to the Penguins in exchange for the exclusive negotiating rights to ... [link]

Published 6/30/2008 by Tony Ferrante at The Confluence of the Three Rivers
The Tampa Bay Lightning made the first big splash of the offseason, finalizing a 7-year, 31.5 million dollar deal with former Penguin Ryan Malone. According to TSN, the first two years of Malone’s deal will net him between an amazing 7-8 million dollars per year. With the Lightning’s signing of Malone, the draft pick given to the Penguins for the negotiating rights of both Malone and Gary Roberts will now change from a fourth to a third round pick.

Malone and Lightning Agree to Long Term Deal

When the Islanders signed Rick DiPietro to an unprecedented 15-year deal it was considered crazy. It still might be a bit, but it's starting to look more and more like teams are interested in locking up players for the long-term. After a whole slew of lengthy contracts given ...

TMS Reports on UFA Eve Live from Sweden

This is Elin Nordegren, a.k.a. Tiger Woods' wife. It would be quite easy to dream of her while missing these bullet points about possible Sundin-related items... "Mats Sundin in no rush to decide his playing future." There's a quality lame excuse to post a hot Swedish chick of a TSN headline; Lightning sign Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts away form the Pens. Sure, you need some players, but 7 years $31.5 mill for Malone? Does the NHL have a salary cap or no? Speaking of $$$, 5 mill per year for Jeff Carter??? TMS would like to take a moment to say goodbye to Michael Ryder. We still don't ...

Monday Ice Water Cooler

Nothing like a cool wind in the face to get Monday going...the day before all hell breaks loose and free agents go absolutely everywhere in creation. Now someone apparently forgot to tell these teams that the frenzy starts tomorrow because there was a flurry of activity yesterday that was quite interesting to say the least. In the afternoon, Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts were signed. Malone's terms were 7 years at 31.5 mill (4.5 per season) and Roberts was 1 year at 1.25 mill with a stipulation he gets 10,000 dollars for every game played. If he plays all 82...he could get as much as 2.07 ...

Roberts signs with Lightning as well
Published 6/30/2008 by Tony Ferrante at The Confluence of the Three Rivers
In a somewhat surprising move, Gary Roberts has signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning. According to TSN, Roberts agreed to terms on a one year contract that pays him a base salary of $1.25 million plus $10,000 for every game that he plays in the 2008-09 NHL regular season.  So if Roberts were to play in all 82 games, he would earn $820,000 in bonuses, which could make his total income for the season $2.07 million. I say it was somewhat surprising in that I didn’t believe at this stage of his career that Roberts would play again for a team so far from his family in the Toronto area. T minus 26 hours to free ...

Tampa's Plan Taking Shape
Published 6/30/2008 by The Puck Stops Here (noreply@blogger.com) at The Puck Stops Here
The Tampa Bay Lightning have new owners in Oren Koules and Len Barrie and they are clearly not afraid of being hands on owners who make high profile moves (despite NHL history being littered with disasters from this ownership style). We are beginning to see their plan to build a new Tampa Bay Lightning team. Of all the ways to build a team, free agency is definitely the fastest and probably the least effective method. The unrestricted free agent talent pool is not good enough to rebuild a team and the high profile players signed will usually sign large contracts that make it hard to fit many under the salary cap. However, it is the fastest ...
