(Chico, incidentally, will be taking Patterson's usual turn in the rotation Friday against the Mets at Port St. Lucie, Fla. Make of that what you will.) As for the finances,...Please click on the title to continue reading this ... [link]

... went under the knife--once again. Finally stating, it was the right thing to do. A few months later--supposedly healthy, happy and newly married--John Patterson came to Spring Training in 2008 ready to reclaim his lost glory. But, the magic didn't return--at least not yet--in 2008. Today, Our Washington Nationals had seen and experienced enough. Patterson's much slower 85 MPH Fastball and mixed results at Florida Camp, led to a most stunning development. Our Washington Nationals released John Patterson. ... resulted in the repeated injuries and surgeries that led to his release. Patterson debuted in Montreal in 2004, posting a (4-7) record in 19 starts with a 5.03 ERA in 98.1 IP, over which he accumulated 99 K's, but it was the '05 season, the Nationals' first in DC, for which Patterson will be remembered in Washington, as the lanky righty went (9-7) with a 3.13 ERA in 31 starts and recorded 185 K's in 198.1 innings. More on Patterson’s release

It’s a shocking development for John Patterson to be released by the Nationals, but clearly management believed he hadn’t recovered his velocity, wasn’t likely to recover his velocity any time soon, and didn’t have the command of pitches they wanted to see. Basically, the team picked John Lannan and Matt Chico over John Patterson. Chico will take Patterson’s place in the rotation against the Mets on Friday. GM Jim Bowden: “We made the judgment we don’t think he’s coming back [to his old ...

WOW!  Didn’t see that coming. If you were busy watching basketball all day long, John Patterson got the ol’ axe yesterday.  Yes, the presumptive favorite to be the (in-name) #1 starter.  The guy pencilled in for the 2nd game of the year is no longer with the team. WP stories here.   And then here.
