I’m just telling you … there are things in the front office that are perceived … I’m saying that there is a strong feeling that that [three-pitch strikeout] was the message to the Red Sox and it’s a strong feeling that that’s unacceptable … there’s a feeling that he didn’t give it his all, let’s put it that way.” However, the Globe’s Gordon Edes follows up with a report dismissing Lobel’s claims of a $100,000 fine . Industry sourced instead said that the actual fine ...
Suggestion Manny purposely took 3 called strikes v Mo denied

One report said Manny was showing his owners he was peeved at the team punishing him. Manny had been fined by the team for pushing a team employee to the floor. The report said his fine was in six figures, and his taking 3 called strikes against Mariano Rivera was a deliberate act to send a message to his owners. A second report denies or retracts the earlier story, adding that his fine was only 5 figures and the Red Sox didn't accuse him of malfeasance in his at bat vs Yankee closer Mariano Rivera.

... Clay Buchholz’s problem is perhaps he is too young. As bright as his future may be, his present has fell short of perhaps unfair expectations. For the fourth straight outing Buchholz surrendered four or more earned runs and lasted less than six innings. For the Red Sox most of the action happened off the field. In the pre-game show Gordon Edes refuted Bob Lobel’s report (as posted by Steve Silva) that Manny Ramirez’s fine for his assault of Jack McCormick was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars as well as Ramirez’s retaliation for the fine ...

Six figures are enough to bu...oh wait a minute, the fine was only in the $10,000-$15,000 range, as per the Boston Globe's Gordon Edes. Perhaps Mr. Lobel was counting the figures after the decimal point. And then subtracting one. And then carrying the denominator under the integral sign and dividing by e. Math is hard. ...

... First of all, Lobel was way off in the amount of the fine. It turns out it was approximately $10,000-$15,000. And the second part of his "report" is more mind-reading than anything else, along the lines of the way Fox News begins stories with "Someone people say ..." to get the most silly, unfounded rumours into the public consciousness. ...
