... off the bench. The 32 y/o wouldn't be limited to platoon with Murphy at 1B since he also plays a solid left field. Thames has spent a decent amount of time at DH which tells me he can come off the bench and hit cold, meaning he should be successful at late inning pinch hitting and platooning. Thames doesn't have the numbers of Dye but he's a better fielder, less fragile and would cost less. Still he's hit 13 or more homeruns the past four years and has a Slg. pct. of .491 lifetime. The Tigers out righted him and he elected to become a free agent (source MLBTR). ...
