Per BA: Cards sign Dominican RHP Santo Franco
Published 7/3/2008 by erik at Future Redbirds
... Hoo-ray! It’s our first bit of international signing news. Per Ben Badler of Baseball America, the Cardinals signed RHP Santo Franco. He’s a tall and lanky cat, at 6-5, 185 lbs. His fastball has been clocked at up to 92, and I’d bet that he’ll throw harder as he fills out. Like most young pitchers, he’s mostly projection right now and he lacks in secondary stuff. He does throw a solid average curveball, but it is a pitch that lacks consistency Some scouts think he’d be better served by learning to throw a slider instead. He had reportedly ...

... several international signings and it looks like, in addition to Morban, the M’s have signed a lanky right-hander from Nicaragua by the name of Jose Valdivia. I thought the M’s might have a chance at him, with a few signings already in system from Nicaragua, but I didn’t want to call it without anything to support the assumption. From what little I’ve read, he sounds like Rafael Soriano plus a couple of inches, with a good fastball and a good slider, but a somewhat slight frame. There are some quality outfielders still left on the market, with neither Rafael nor Yorman ...

... to scouting supervisor Juan Mercado - Roberto De La Cruz. International baseball relations is something I really take an interest in, so I get excited to see us looking outside the amateur draft for ballplayers. Perhaps it'll be me directing the scouting of these guys in Latin America someday... As soon as the U.S. changes its stance on Cuba, we might really see an influx of talent. You can read more on the signings here, here, here, and here. Enough links for ya? I thought so. According to MLB Trade Rumors, the Cardinals ...

International intrigue
The international signing period starts today. This is essentially for Latin American players who are 16 (or will turn 16) between now and the end of August.
