Notre Damn Is ‘Poppin Their Collars Now’
Published 3/21/2008 by Chris Mottram at Mr. Irrelevant
... on the highlights below, I guess it’s all for the better. Perhaps worse than the loss itself was that Gus Johnson couldn’t even get his “rise and fire!” on. Although at the 1:42 mark he does give us a gem: Maryland lost as well last night to ‘Cuse, so my only rooting interest left this March is for Jamie’s bracket to implode when Louisville loses today. UPDATE: After the jump the completely insane pre-game speech from Jim Larranaga. From The Sporting Blog (via HHR ): Slightly less inspiring that his “UNC is Superman, but our fans know we’re Kryptonite” ...

The Tournament Has Seriously Been Lacking Magic

... VCU). Yesterday, there were none (K-State over USC was not an upset, I'm sorry). The "magic" that Laranaga referred to in the above speech appears to be gone for the moment, and that's really a shame. I like the magic, I like the mysticism, and that's probably the reason I got only 10 picks correct out of a possible 16 yesterday. Hopefully today's games prove me wrong because I've got another three upsets penciled in (Siena, St. Joes and St. Marys, if you must know). (Video H/T to Hugging Harold Reynolds )

Someone Should Tell Jim Larranaga That Leprechauns Are Immune to Magic

... Mid-Majors Basketball, EastHere's a reason why coaches shouldn't let cameras into the locker room before games. When you're going up against the school that pretty much invented the pep-talk cottage industry, you've gotta come up with something better than crumpling up a piece of paper. A little too much comedy and way too much about what happened with a completely different team. (H/T Hugging Harold Reynolds)   Permalink | Email this ...

Irish Leave No Doubt in 1st Round

This was definitely not the same George Mason squad that made that magical run to the Final Four two years ago, that's for sure. Irish Look For More Rocky Mountain High Magic

The second round game of Notre Dame and Washington State will be more like a chess match of strength versus strength. Notre Dame's high octane offense will try and get something going against the stingy Cougar defense. Just like the George Mason game, Washington State will try and dictate the tempo with their slow, methodical style.
