What A Putz!
The Ballclub —
... Other moves would certainly be necessary. Perhaps the bigger names, Fuentes, Hoffman or Wood, would be in the mix, or if not, other, non-tendered guys would have to be brought in to push the existing names that would survive the offseason. But other moves were necessary. As I mentioned in my 2005 Capsule, it's often the names that arrive in trades that you don't necessarily consider. And late Wednesday night, Minaya and the Mets made such a move, in another brilliant deal to bring in J.J. Putz from the Seattle Mariners in a massive 3-team, 12-player deal. ...

Putz Trouble Brewing?
Mike Silva's New York Baseball Digest —
Quote via ESPN
An All-Star in 2007 when he saved 40 games, Putz was 6-5 with a 3.88 ERA and 15 saves in 23 chances last season, when he missed long stretches with ribcage and elbow injuries. His agent, Craig Landis, said Putz wants to remain a closer.
“He’s one of the top five or 10 closers in the game,” Landis said. “No, he would not want to be a set-up man.”
I am sure this will be brought up by the local beat guys. Putz really has no choice since he is under the Mets control till the end of 2010. I wonder ...

Posted by Rob Neyer Today's links, for the first time ever, come with the full endorsement of the Baseball Writers' Association of America (and their eye-popping Web site ): • Just a few quick takeaways on Wednesday night's many-tentacled trade : 1) If the Mariners add Endy Chavez and Franklin Gutierrez to Ichiro Suzuki as everyday players, they'll have one of the greatest defensive outfields we've seen; 2) it's not clear why the Indians were involved, unless they have some serious man-crush on Joe Smith ; and 3) if the Mets really ...
Winter Meetings, Day 4: Rule 5 Draft
Bucs Dugout —
... Oh, and there's a huge trade: The Mets get J.J. Putz, infielder Luis Valbuena, outfielder Jeremy Reed and reliever Sean Green for Aaron Heilman, Endy Chavez, Jason Vargas, Joe Smith and three minor leaguers: Mike Carp, Mikael Cleto and Ezequiel Carrera. The Indians get Smith and the Mariners get everybody else; also, the Indians send Franklin Guiterrez to the M's. There's almost too much here to process, but I like this for the Mariners, who upgrade their outfield defense dramatically while adding two of the ...

... headline (specifically by the Yankees and Sabathia) and today's massive J.J. Putz trade (which probably pissed off a few Fantasy keeper league players), the Mets are easily in much better shape then they were 365 days ago. You could make the argument that Billy Wagner to Francisco Rodriguez is a wash (when comparing last year's Wagner to this year's K-Rod, it seems reasonable, though K-Rod has the edge), but the addition of Putz and possibly the subtraction of Aaron Heilman clearly makes the Mets bullpen so (soooo) much better than last year. ...

... All-You-Can-Eat snow crab special at the Imperial Palace.
But they are finally getting things done (aside from this whole Jake Peavy to Chicago deal).
In the past 48 hours, relief pitching has been the order of the day (or days technically because 48 hours is more than one day. You understand).
K-Rod signed with the Mets.
Kerry Wood inked up with the Indians for two years.
And J.J. Putz was sent by Seattle via Cleveland to join K-Rod in New York. ...
Omar Minaya Must Love Awesome Names
Jorge Says No! —
In a span of 24 hours, the Mets have picked up two guys with phenomenal names. 1. JJ Putz -acquired via trade last night 2. Rocky Cherry -acquired via rule V draft today Seriously, dude's name is Rocky Cherry. Who came up with that name? Is it a nickname? Either way, it's an absolutely fantastic name. I'm amazed that a human being could have such an amazingly unique, yet puzzling name. I can see it now, the NY Post headline after Cherry blows his first big game as a Met: "Cherry Bombed" or "Cherry Rocked" ...

Mets Need: Pitching!
The Real Dirty Mets Blog —
... Of course, I’m not holding my breath in the hopes that the Mets do lure Duncan to Queens (though I may talk to a certain bagel guy near Citi Field). Instead, let’s focus on other ways to improve the team pitching, specifically looking at what type of pitchers the Mets should be targeting and which ones are available. ...
