Mets part ways with Franco
The Mets are expected to remove Julio Franco from their roster today to make room for Lastings Milledge, Newsday has learned. An announcement will be made before today's game. It's not clear whether Franco, who turns 48 next month, will retire, or whether he'll accept an unconditional release and try to find a job elsewhere. In his second season with the Mets, Franco has 10 hits, including one ...

Lastings Milledge could be the biggest chump alive. He and Ricky Henderson aka Ricky Henny bring the crazy level on that team to an unseasonable level

It took a while, but it looks like the last player to play alongside Abner Doubleday has finally hung up the cleats.

This is too bad. Not a huge surprise, but part of me wants Franco to play forever. He's a genuine guy, not a chump like Roger Clemens.

Amazin' Avenue — According to Newsday the Mets are expected to sent Julio Franco down to Triple-A to make room for Lastings Milledge's return tonight. Adios, Julio
New York Mets Fan BlogAnother semi-bombshell from Newsday's Ken Davidoff: The Mets are expected to remove Julio Franco from their roster today to make room for Lastings Milledge, Newsday has learned. An announcement will be made before today's game. It's not clear whether Franco, who turns 49 next month, will retire, or whether he'll accept an unconditional release and try to find a job elsewhere. Fond feelings for Julio Franco aside, this has been a long time coming. Good to see the Mets make a decision that will clearly improve the ballclub. Also, it looks like HoJo, and not Rickey, ...

Rickey Will Save This Club
Mike's Mets — ... The impatient offensive approach that has made for some virtually unwatchable games has been around all season, even when the club was winning. I honestly worry that this flawed approach, as much as anything, could cost the Mets an October run. You had to change the dynamic, and the Mets are trying to do that. Newsday is now reporting that Julio Franco's tenure with this club is coming to an end, at least as a player. For those Mets fans out there who somehow worked themselves up into believing that the club isn't committed to making the changes necessary to turn things around, I think that shows that they are. ...

Julio Franco: A Life
The Feed — ... The New York Mets may have ended the career of the oldest player in the major leagues today when they designated Julio Franco for assignment. Lastings Milledge, born during Franco's fourth major league season, is back from injury and a worldwide rap tour and will take his place on the roster. The Mets have 10 days to trade Franco or another team could claim him off waivers but that doesn't seem too likely. That makes for a quiet end to one of the unlikeliest careers in baseball. ...

allonthefield.blogspot.com 7/12/2007 — It seems baseball is an addiction that Rickey Henderson just can't shake. Henderson's latest comeback isn't as a player, thank goodness, but as the New York Mets' hitting coach. Now to the important question: what's the over-under that Henderson will be back on the field as a player before the end of the season? Rumor has it that Julio Franco likes his chances.
