3:31 p.m.: I had a very entertaining chat with Bob Mandt, a former stadium operations manager at Shea recently while I was preparing a recent story I wrote on the Home Run Apple. He was telling me of some of the early days at Shea, when team staff moved in a few months before the 1964 season began. “We were the shock troops,” Mandt said with a chuckle. It was cold back then - December, 1963 - and there were portable heaters on the walls because the central heating hadn’t been installed. ...
