May as well start a WBC 2009 category with this announcement: Mexico City, San Juan, Tokyo and Toronto were selected Monday to host first-round games during the second World Baseball Classic in 2009. The 16-nation tournament will switch from a round-robin to a double-elimination format during the first two rounds. Japan won the initial WBC in 2006, beating Cuba 10-6 in the final at San Diego. Sites for the later rounds have not yet been announced. Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles is the leading candidate to host the semifinals and final. The last-time-ever baseball Olympic competition should be very fun to watch this ...

Some of the first tangible news of the 2009 World Baseball Classic was announced yesterday. I had a blast watching the last tournament (I'll sprinkle a few pictures into this post that I took when attending the US v. Mexico and Canada games last year), and it looks like this next tournament is going to be a great improvement. There were two big news items: No More Tiebreakers! This bit of news has gotten a bit less play, but I think it's probably the most exciting thing in the announcement: at least in the first round, teams will use a double-elimination format to determine who advances similar to that used in the NCAA baseball tournament. ...
