Smith said his mission this winter, simply, is "to try to make the club better." It's a relative statement, of course, because while Angels owner Arte Moreno didn't hesitate in forking over $90 million to Hunter during a whirlwind, 24-hour negotiation last week, Twins owner Carl Pohlad wouldn't free up $90 million for one player if you gave him three months to come up with the money. If the ... [link]

Nady and McLouth For Headley?
Published 11/28/2007 by Tim Dierkes at MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
... CBS Sportsline's Scott Miller reports that the Pirates are discussing sending Xavier Nady and Nate McLouth to the Padres for third baseman Chase Headley.  Nady came up through the Padres' system before being sent to the Mets for Mike Cameron in November of '05. ...

Rumor: Peavy is Available for Right Price
Published 11/28/2007 by McFleece at MLB Fleece Factor
... According to CBS Sportsline, “rival clubs say that San Diego GM Kevin Towers is discussing Cy Young winner Jake Peavy in trade talks this winter, though the feeling is that it’s just to gauge interest as the Padres attempt to work an extension with Peavy. “  Sportsline speculates that the Padres may look to fill their holes - particularly in centerfield and second base - this offseason using a Peavy trade. ...

CBS Rumors and News: Rowand, Headley, Hunter, Wood
Published 11/28/2007 by McFleece at MLB Fleece Factor
... We mentioned the Peavy rumor, but CBS Sportstline also had some other good rumblings today: Sportsline expects the Phillies to be “aggressive” in trying to keep Aaron Rowand.  If true, this would be another lie by the Philly brass, who claimed to only be in on free agent pitchers this offseason, but was then exposed as offering Mike Lowell a 4 year, $50M deal.  The Pirates are making a serious run at Padres third base prospect Chase Headley (.330, 20, 78 for Double-A San Antonio), by offering outfielders Xavier Nady and Nate McClouth.  ...

Huntington/Perrotto chat recaps

... process, dealing a player like Wilson in the division really isn't so worrisome. Especially when they will eat his entire salary (although I think he's underpaid myself and therefore has value to the Cards). Jerry Cransick at ESPN also reports the Pirates are "actively shopping" Matt Morris. Right, well, there might be someone willing to take on a workhorse. But just how much would we have to sent with him, or does it even matter? Combine that with the Nady to Padres rumor from yesterday and Jeff Passan's announcement that ...

News Roundup: Young/Garza Deal Happens, Pirates Shop Morris

... -P- I also want to mention the Xavier Nady-and-Nate McLouth-for-Chase Headley rumor, which has already been posted in the diaries and which Greg wrote to me about a couple days ago. Headley's a good third base prospect who has more upside than McLouth, and I think this trade would be a great idea. I've seen some message-board fretting about Neil Walker already being at third, but Walker's a long way from the big leagues, and if both Walker and Headley end up being good big league players, that's a good problem to have. I'd like Headley ...
