June 22, 2007 -- It’s unlikely that Mike Piazza will have a second homecoming against the Mets this weekend. The legendary former Met, who returned to Shea last year with the Padres, is with the A’s now, and Oakland will face the Mets in a three-game set at Shea Stadium starting tonight. Yet, it would have been a whole lot worse. Had the Mets fallen into Scott Boras' trap and signed Barry Zito -- who has struggled (6-8, 483 ERA) this year and is signed for 6.5 more years -- it would have been disastrous. Plus, I still hold out hope for Burgos and it's not like the Mets would have properly utilized Heath Bell if he were still on the team, anyway. So while they certainly didn't improve much this offseason, the only long-term damage they reaped was the three-year Scott Schoeneweis deal (10.8 million), which is at least manageable for a rich club like the Mets. So, yeah, Omar proved he's human. But it doesn't change the fact that Mets fans are lucky to have him as GM instead of some fool who would have panicked and damaged the team years into the future.
