Elias Rankings released
The Hardball Times —
Since the Elias rankings were back-calculated last year by Eddie Bajek of Tigers Thoughts, there should be less excitement regarding the release the the Elias free agent compensation rankings. There was a whole lot of outrage two seasons ago, and still a little last season, when the rankings were released. Orlando Hudson a type-B last year? We knew well in advance that it would happen. Regardless, here are the official Elias Rankings for this off-season. Feel free to voice your complaints in the comments. ...

Per 'Elias Rankings Byrd and Pudge Type B FA's
Carl Crawford, Brian Shouse, Gregg Zaun, and Russ Springer Each Receive Type-B Status
DRaysBay —
... Per Ed Price.
Crawford won't reach free agency, Zaun and Shouse have options which may be declined, and Springer is a true free agent. The questions now are whether any of them will be offered arbitration in order to gain a supplemental round compensation pick. Given his age (and potential salary) it seems rather unlikely Shouse gets offered. The same can probably be said for Springer. We'll see though.
Some more thoughts:
LaTroy Hawkins is a Type-A free agent. He will cost some team a first round pick if they decide (for whatever ...

Elias Sports Bureau releases free agent rankings
Circling The Bases —
[image] This afternoon Elias Sports Bureau released the 2010 free agent rankings , which determine draft pick compensation received by teams losing players. Type A free agents require the signing team to send the old team their first draft pick after the 15th overall selection, with the old team also receiving a "sandwich" pick between the first and second rounds. Type B free agents don't result in the loss of a draft pick by the signing team, but do compensate the old team with a "sandwich" pick. In other words, teams may shy away from signing some Type A free agents because ...
Elias Rankings for Cubs Free Agents
The Cub Reporter (TCR) | A Chicago Cubs Blog —
The official Elias rankings are out and they don't differ too much from the reverse-engineered list that MLB Trade Rumors was putting out (courtesy of Eddie Bajek).
Type A - John Grabow, Kevin Gregg
Type B - Rich Harden
Reed Johnson didn't make the cut and even if offered arbitration, the Cubs would not get any draft picks if he signed with another team. A Type A free agent - if offered arbitration by his previous team - nets a first round pick and a supplemental pick if he signs with another club. A Type B free ...

The former team also gets an extra pick between the first and second rounds. If a team loses a Type B free agent, it gets an extra “sandwich” pick. The types are calculated based on statistics over the 2008-09 seasons. Type B - I believe there’s a vaccine for that…

Not The Best, But Still Worth A Look
Hot Foot —
The MLB has released the annual Elias Rankings that determine the free agent level of players entering the market. To sign a Type A free agent, you must surrender your first round pick, unless you are in the top fifteen. Since the Mets hold the seventh overall pick in the upcoming draft, the Mets first round pick is protected and therefore would have to give up their second round pick in the event that they were to sign a Type A free agent. Type B free agents require no draft pick compensation by the player’s new team, but is granted a sandwich pick in between rounds one and ...
Another Reason Matsui Won't Be Back
Pinstripe Alley —
... The Elias Rankings came out today, and everybody's favorite 2009 World Series MVP took a hit in the standings.
Hideki Matsui will be an uncompensated free agent, providing the Yankees with no reason to offer him arbitration.
I have figured from the start that someone will overpay the aging DH, but this pretty much seals the deal.
(By the way, I read Mariners so many places- I get it, they have signed a lot of Japanese players- but my money would be on an organization that is treading water and hoping for ...
Where Darren Oliver = Matt Holliday Happens
FanGraphs Baseball —
... The official Elias free agent compensation rankings were released earlier today. For those unaware, these rankings essentially determine the draft compensation (if any) a player’s previous team will recover based on a few criteria. For one, the former team must offer the player arbitration or have the player sign before the arbitration offering deadline. From there, Type-A players who sign with a team outside of the top half of round one will see their new team surrender their first round pick and their old team receive said pick as well as a compensatory pick in the ...

• One thing Cashman feels likely to accomplish during the GM Meetings is getting a firm grasp of the trade market. “I’m open minded,” he said. ”I’m not looking into anything other than I’m going to come in here and look at what the trade market is, then we’ll gather all of our pro scouts together. We’ll take a strategy from there.”

... "Type A" classification for free agency. On the Cubs side John Grabow and Kevin Gregg got the Type A classification while Rich Harden was a Type B. That means if the player is offered arbitration, declines, then signs with another team the original team gets draft pick compensation. Type A is first round pick plus a sandwich pick, Type B just a sandwich pick. Also the top 15 picks in the draft are protected (meaning the Cubs and Sox can't lose their pick). Matt Holliday: This seems pretty obvious. Bad news: the Mets, Holliday's current Media Suitor of choice, have a protected first rounder in 2010, leaving the Cardinals stuck with a second rounder should he end up bolting for Queens.
