... MLB trade rumors has posted a list of the 2008 free agent class. We're set in the outfield, 3B, SS and 1B (Carp). The candidates for second don't excite me and the catchers aside from keeping Lo Duca aren't very thrilling. The pitching class looks great, some of the guys that raised my interest-Mark Buehrle, Carlos Zambrano, Bartolo Colon, Jake Westbrook, Jason Jennings, Joe kennedy are all under thirty. The relievers have less to offer the best of the crop is Jorge Julio, Scott Linebrink, Kerry Wood, Eric Gagne and Francisco Cordero. For the full list please visit the site.

The Yankees didn't want Gary Sheffield going to Boston, so they picked up his option and dealt him safely to the Tigers.Only a couple of teams could afford A-Rod (the Red Sox, Mets, Yankees, Cubs, Dodgers and Angels). You can probably take the Mets off the list because they have David Wright at 3rd and Reyes at SS. You can also probably take the Dodgers off the list because they have Furcal at short and prospects like Andy LaRoche and Brandon Wood for 3rd. Couple that with the fact that the Yankees won't want A-Rod going to the Red Sox plus the fact that there really aren't any

You have to figure that the Rays will go into the spring with 3 spots needing to be filled - Scott Kazmir and James Shields are shoo-ins - begging the question of who will fill those spots. Of course, there's Edwin Jackson who has finally begun to make some strides on the mound, though he has regressed back to the mean a little bit lately. He's very consistently inconsistent. Andy Sonnanstine has shown flashes of being an effective, David Cone-like pitcher on the hill, but he hasn't been able to put together a string of good starts in a row. He's also hit-or-miss. Jason Hammel has looked much, much better lately, but the jury is still out on whether or not he can be an effective big leaguer. There's also a crop of other arms that features J.P.
