Wizards Into 2009 SuperLiga (And Other State of the League News)
Down the Byline —
The Kansas City Wizards will play in the 2009 SuperLiga. That's the word from Commissioner Don Garber in his State of the League. The Wizards qualify for SuperLiga as one of the top 4 teams in the regular season NOT to make the CONCACAF Champion's League. This is a rule change from last year where it was the top 4 teams regardless of whether or not they qualified for the Champion's League. The change is something many people were wanting, and saying should happen, basically turn the SuperLiga into a CONCACAF version of the UEFA Cup. So with the Crew qualifying as the Supporter's Shield winners, New York qualifying for making MLS Cup, DC for winning the Open Cup, and ...

... qualifies as the fourth team with the next most points in MLS during the 2008 regular season.
Qualification for SuperLiga 2009 will be as follows:
The top four teams, based on regular season record, who are not competing in CONCACAF Champions League in 2009, will qualify for SuperLiga 2009. From LA: Garber drops some news
The Netminder —
MLS commissioner Don Garber's annual pre-MLS Cup press conference started late as some meetings ran long, but he had a bit of news for us: - Montreal has dropped out of the expansion race, drawing a few gasps in the room. - No, Bayern Munich hasn't contacted MLS about a loan for Landon Donovan. - Roster size ... IS changing. Basically, they're slashing the developmental roster and trying to beef up the senior roster. "Right now, our focus is to be sure we have the most competitive senior roster ... not walking from development, but going in a different direction." - Playoff system ... is NOT changing. ...
MLS Rules Changes for 2009
3rd Degree —
And how it effects FC Dallas. November 21st, 2008 . By: Buzz Carrick HTML clipboard Major League Soccer has announced some rules changes for 2009 . Here’s how these rules effect FCD. End of Reserve League, Roster to 24 or Less The Reserve League is gone and the senior roster can be increased. MLS teams can now have a senior roster of eighteen (18) to twenty (20) as long as it’s inside the cap. MLS teams can now have four (4) players outside the cap on the developmental roster, including Generation adidas. Team with more than four (4) Ga’s can keep all of them, a category into which FCD will fall. Even if Blake Wagner is graduated FCD will still have 5. 30 Game ...
2009 MLS Changes
Climbing the Ladder —
Here they are. Let's take a look at them one by one: 1) The reserve division was eliminated and rosters have been reduced from 28 to 24. However, the number of senior roster spots has increased by two to 20. Losing the 4 developmental spots results in a savings of $51,600 - $71,600 per year per team. However, that's offset changing 2 developmental spots changed into senior roster spots, at $30,200+ per year (likely more). Not to mention that the salary cap will continue to go up. So changing the spots wasn't done to save money, but rather to increase the talent level as teams should be able to add decent players to be #19-20 on the senior ...

Mid-Day Roundup: Carlesimo’s Firing Was Inevitable
The Big Lead —
Betty White would like to thank you for being a friend. At 78 years old, she’s still going strong. Try and admit you don’t think she’s still attractive. In other news, a student in Florida was arrested for farting. I’m not making that up. Yes, yes… people who fart get arrested, people who sell weed can go to jail and people who murder can get out on good behavior after a few years. Fun times.
Our cyber cronies found visual proof that P.J. Carlesimo’s firing was just a formality. [The Sports Hernia]

To protect or not to protect, that is the question…
Behind the Shield —
Today is a busy day on the competetive side of things for Real Salt Lake. On top of signing defender Jamison Olave to a contract extension, today is the day that the protection lists from all 14 MLS teams are due for Wednesday’s expansion draft for the new Seattle Sounders FC. We’ll get to the list in a moment, but before we do there were a couple other pertinent moves that had an effect on the decision making process.
RSL finished the season with five players who enjoyed Generation Adidas status during the 2008 campaign; Nik Besagno, Tony Beltran, Alex Nimo, Chris Seitz, and Yura Movsisyan (Yura was not officially Gen. Adi. but his status was effectively the ...

Hitchcock - Off-Season Plans...
The Official FC Dallas Blog —
In the past week, I shared our analysis of the team, business and youth system. In this blog, I'd like to share some of the off-season plans for FCD. Team: We feel we have a good foundation of players to build on. And even though we'll make changes to the 08 team, and some we expect to be key additions, we're not planning to make wholesale changes. As some may have noticed, MLS announced changes to the roster size for 2009, bringing the rosters down from 28 players to 24. We currently have five Generation adidas players, and there’s a chance we could add more since we have two first-round picks in the ...
Link: Dwayne DeRosario and Pattern Recognition
Dave's Football Blog —
The human brain has a tendency to look for patterns in places where none exist. It’s a phenomenon known as pareidolia , and it explains why conspiracy theories are so popular, and why some people see a human face on Mars or the Virgin Mary in a random MRI scan . This ability to look for significance where there is none is ingrained in us from our earliest days of existence, when our ancestors took off running whenever the bushes started rustling, because that could have been a hungry lion getting ready to pounce, and hey, nobody wants to be dinner. That might explain why I’m seeing a pattern behind the Dwayne DeRosario trade that took place over the ...
Wizards in US Open Cup Proper
Down the Byline —
For the past two years, the Wizards have had to go through qualifying to get into the US Open Cup proper. In 2007 they lost out to Real Salt Lake in their qualifier, last year they defeated Colorado to move into the tournament. This year, the Wizards get an automatic pass into the US Open Cup proper since they were one of the top 6 teams in the league points standings last season. That's at least the way it's currently looking according to USOpenCup.com ...
