MNF Preview - Pittsburgh (5-2 SU, ATS) at Washington (6-2 SU, ATS)
The Pittsburgh Steelers have looked dazzling against AFC foes, winning all five games SU versus conference opponents to claim AFC North supremacy. However, when facing NFC competition the black and gold are 0-2 this season.
The Steelers came into the 2008-09 season with the toughest schedule in the NFL based on last year's winning percentages, featuring just two teams that had losing records. Pittsburgh cruised through the AFC portion of its schedule, outscoring opponents by 12.2 points per game while going 5-0 SU and 3-2 ATS.
Ben Roethlisberger was grounded eight times in a 15-6 loss at Philadelphia on Sept. 21, then got sacked five times and threw four interceptions in a 21-14 loss to the New York Giants last Sunday, accounting for Pittsburgh's two NFC defeats in which they failed to cover the spread in both. But much to the delight of Steelers' investors, their team is a solid 7-3 ATS in their last ten games following a SU loss.
While the Giants (26) and Eagles (23) topped the NFC in sacks heading into Week 9, the Redskins have only 10 sacks in eight games, including
just four in their past six contests. The Steelers and their online NFL betting supporters hope that will make for a better outcome in its third NFC
matchup against a club from one of the NFL’s best divisions on Monday Night Football, when they invade the nation’s capital for the first time in 20 years to take on the Washington Redskins.
Big Ben and company are known for playing well in the spot light on Monday evenings, though, the Steelers are an unseemingly 1-5 ATS in their last six MNF appearances. It's going to be tough to recover lost MNF wagering funds considering the Redskins have the NFL’s sixth-ranked defense, allowing a stingy 278.1 yards per game.
Online NFL wagering enthusiasts who play totals should keep in mind, part of Washington's 'D' is assisted by an offense that controls the clock. The Redskins are fourth in the league in time of possession (32:31) due-in-part to an efficient quarterback Jason Campbell and Clinton Portis, the NFL rushing leader. That paves the way for a juicy total wager on under 36½, as displayed at BetPhoenix.com NFL odds that list Washington -2 on the side.
Campbell has thrown eight touchdowns without an interception, and his rating of 100.5 is fifth-best in the NFL. He went 23-of-28 for a season-high 328 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown strike to Santana Moss, in Washington’s 25-17 win in Detroit on Sunday. Portis, meanwhile, has rushed for 944 yards which is 260 more than Minnesota’s second-leading league rusher Adrian Peterson, and Portis has gained at least 120 yards in each of his past five games.
Though, Portis may find running against the Steelers more difficult. St. Louis, Cleveland and Detroit, Washington’s last three opponents, rank 24th or worse in the league in rushing yards allowed. Pittsburgh is third at 71.6 yards per game. Portis has 21 carries for 64 yards in two career games against the Steelers, both while with Denver.
Pittsburgh could get a big lift in its own ground game if their feature back, Willie Parker, can return from a knee injury that has kept him out of the past four games. Parker will be a game-time decision. But one key offensive player who will return for sure is receiver Santonio Holmes, following a suspension served last Sunday after being charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana.
The Steelers have won their last three meetings SU with the Redskins, all in Pittsburgh. The teams last played in Washington in 1988, their only meeting in the nation’s capital since 1968.
If you bet NFL online, this will be a hard-hitting, exciting and potentually this year's most competitive MNF game thus far into the season. Here's some key ATS football betting trends for this awesome matchup, as BetPhoenix ask...Are you ready for some football?
