Is there anything in baseball—in sport, for that matter—at the moment that is more aethetically pleasing than the pitching motion of Mariano Rivera? Bring hands together. Look down. Contract body. Extend into an X [above]. Release. Rest at attention. It's an amazing physical poetry, something worthy of Balanchine or Martha Graham for its grace, discipline, balance, and sheer beauty. And ... Bronx Banter: Now I Hold My Crotch Cause I'm Top Notch
Published 5/31/2008 at Baseball Toaster
... it is the blinding talent. The pursuit of something perfect. I love the drama of that. That a strikeout or a failure to drive in a runner from second seems bigger, deeper with Rodriguez. I derive full value from his at bats because of the expectations I place on them. For me, each of his at-bats holds the promise of getting to watch one of the great all time players do something great. It's like sheer sensation. Then he acknowledged the meeting, saying only, "That's ...

Check out Mariano Rivera's career BABIP someday (okay, I'll tell you. It's .268. Usually, BABIP is around .290). Or read this article of mine from a few years ago (relevant point at the bottom).
