While the General Managers' Meetings continue at the O'Hare Airport Hilton, there's not much worthwhile to pass along other than irresponsible rumor mongering based on vague and non-specific quotes. MLBtraderumors.com can keep you up to date with what's going on outside the nation's busiest airport. Here are some links to get you through the night: AL Gold Gloves were announced today. Mark Teixeira took home his third, Derek Jeter his fourth. The gnashing of teeth over this has already begun, but let's remember, the Gold Glove is largely popularity and reputation based and not steeped in the evolving, if imperfect, ...
Derek Jeter & Mark Teixeira snag Gold Gloves
lenNY's Yankees —
And who said Derek Jeter has no range? Jeter was honored with the AL Gold Glove for shortstop, and Mark Teixeira took home the Gold Glove for first base, Major League Baseball announced today. And no, these aren’t two big-name guys who win it every year. Both didn’t win last year, meaning both made improvements to earn back the honors. Rob Neyer of ESPN.com had a major problem with the selected Gold Glove winners. I didn’t agree with him, especially after he said Kevin Youkilis deserved the Gold Glove for first base over Tex. ...
Polanco gets some Gold Love
The Detroit Tiger Weblog —
... But back to Polanco’s candidacy. Rob Neyer wasn’t a fan of the choice grouping Polanco with Derek Jeter, Torii Hunter, and Adam Jones as the players that the voters “flat out blew it.” I’m not really sure how Polanco fits in that group. Polanco fared well on both conventional fielding metrics (only 2 errors) as well as the more advanced measures as ...
NOBODY TAKES THE GOLD GLOVE AWARDS SERIOUSLY, RIGHT?
Unathletic —
... There’s pretty much zero correlation between the winners and actual defensive prowess. To see my point, all you have to do is go back to 1999 when Rafael Palmeiro won the Gold Glove…after playing just 28 games at first base! Amazing, right? If you’re discussing a player’s credentials, a Gold Glove carries about as much weight as the World’s Best Grandpa Award. It’s like arguing that a musician is good because they’ve won a Grammy.

Just end it now. Stop having the Gold Glove awards. If you're not going to award them to the best fielders at each position, then end the charade. This year's selections are a joke, especially awarding a fourth trophy to Derek Jeter. ESPN's outstanding writer Rob Neyer made some excellent, incisive comments on the awards. In fact, they're better than anything I can offer, so I'm going to quote Mr. Neyer: Regarding the outfield selections: "In the outfield, the voters had to choose both Torii Hunter and Ichiro Suzuki, because both had won eight straight Gold Gloves and everybody knows that if you've won eight you automatically deserve to ...

Now that the GM Meetings finally have come to an end in Chicago, we have a clearer picture as to what Doug Melvin and other organizations plan to do this winter.
Major League News
Doug Melvin remained extremely busy over the past few days. If you were an agent with a pitcher on the market, Doug Melvin talked to you. This Adam McCalvy piece specifically mentions Randy Wolf, Doug Davis, Jarrod Washburn, and John Lackey. If I remember correctly, Randy Wolf's agent also represents Rich Harden, so the two sides could have discussed multiple pitchers.
