There’s a bizarre story developing out of Texas this week, involving now-deceased former Carolina Panther offensive lineman Curtis Whitley . Curtis Whitley Meth Smoker Carolina Panthers The CHARLOTTE OBSERVER and RALEIGH NEWS & OBSERVER report that Whitley, who was the starting center for the Panthers in 1995 and part of 1996, was found dead recently in Texas. Family members are “still awaiting details on his cause of death .” Whitley, who turned 39 on Saturday, was suspended by the NFL for violating the league’s drug policy in 1996. Former Panther Curtis Whitley passed away sometime Monday, according to both the Cha-town Observer and N&O. Whitley started all 16 games for the Cats in 1995 and started half the season in ‘96 before being suspended by the league. There’s not much more you can say — other than to express condolences and prayers to his family — about a guy who, from all accounts, struggled mightily with substance abuse while he was in the league. Reports indicate that he dealt with alcohol and harder drugs. Tragic.
