Did Game 1 in New Orleans two weeks ago feel like a series-clincher too?  I hate the Spurs as much as the next guy, but let's give 'em a little credit--they will bounce back.

It may have just been one game, one loss in a series that requires three more to be decided, but Game One felt like one helluva lot more than just a series lead , says the Times’ Bill Plaschke. If you watched the game, Laker fan or not, you have to agree. Overcoming a 20-point deficit against the defending champs is no easy task, and to accomplish such a feat does wonders for this young team’s confidence. The ...

... Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times: "It was just one game, just Game 1, just a beginning. It felt like seven games, Game 7, an ending. The Lakers didn't just come back from a 20-point deficit to steal an 89-85 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference finals opener Wednesday. They turned basketball's smartest crunch-time team into dummies. They turned basketball's toughest veterans into twitching rookies. They stole a victory from a team that was doing everything right, and they stole it after doing everything wrong." ...

... Bill Plaschke, LA Times: "In the end, when the unimaginable blinked on the scoreboard, when the unthinkable danced on the hardwood, the cheers even drowned out Randy Newman. All but three words. "We love it!" the too-cool Staples Center fans giddily chanted with their victory song. "We love it! We love it! We love it!" Oh, will the Lakers forever love this one. Man, will the Spurs forever loathe it. It was just one game, just Game 1, just a beginning. It felt like seven games, Game 7, an ending." ...

In-depth analysis: Lakers comeback or Spurs meltdown

So was Game 1 a monumental Spurs meltdown or an extraordinary Lakers comeback? Call it a meltback – one part meltdown, one part comeback. To pull off such a rally, in a tone-setting game of this magnitude, the Lakers definitely needed some help. Los Angeles got it in the fourth quarter when a tiring Spurs squad went 3 of 21 from the floor, including 1 of 9 from beyond the arc.

Bryant Dominates Second Half as Lakers Erase 20 Point Deficit to Edge Spurs

Kobe Bryant scored 25 second half points as the Lakers came back from a 65-45 third quarter deficit to beat the Spurs 89-85. Tim Duncan repeatedly trapped Bryant on pick and roll only to see Bryant lob passes over his head to Pau Gasol for easy hoops; in last year's Finals, Duncan played off of the weak-shooting LeBron James and denied him the opportunity to make such passes.

Postcards From LA, Vol. 11: One Lakers Fan Tracks His Team Through the NBA Playoffs

This is why we watch. When Tim Duncan made a 7-foot hook shot to put the defending champions up by 20 (65-45) with just under 6 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, all looked lost: the game, the series, and the Lakers season. I felt sick to my stomach. There was no way, no way, that they could possibly squander such a commanding advantage, right? Cue Kobe Bean Bryant.
