ESPN.com Ten road wins already. A 1-0 record against Boston. Four measly losses in 19 games to teams with a combined record of 39-12. Add it all up and there's really no mystery. The most worthy No. 1 in ESPN.com's weekly NBA Power Rankings is the surprising Orlando Magic. Maybe they can't stay up here for the long term … or even the short term with a tough game Monday night at Golden State. ... [link]

Week in Review: Road getting tougher for Mavs
Published 12/3/2007 by Joe Boikess at Showboating
After last season’s 67 win campaign, I’ve come to expect a lot from the Dallas Mavericks this season.  I truly expect them to win almost every game they play, especially at home or against teams from the Eastern Conference.  But this season, things aren’t going as planned.  Injuries to Eddie Jones, Devean George and Erick Dampier have forced Avery Johnson and the coaching staff to shuffle their normal rotation, and guys that were supposed to do certain things (Trenton Hassell, DeSagana Diop) haven’t been able to do what’s asked of them on a consistent basis.  The defensive intensity that was supposedly brought in when ...

Rankings Power!

A month after the nadir of the Sacramento Kings, the team's outside perception is (rightfully) gaining. John Hollinger's formula places the Kings at #18, just behind Indiana and Memphis and ahead of Philadelphia and Atlanta. Meanwhile, Marc Stein's list sticks Sacramento at #19, smack between up-and-down Milwaukee and down-and-down Chicago.

Doc’s No Different
Published 12/4/2007 by redsarmy at RedsArmy.com: The Voice Of Celtics Fans
Doc Rivers is the NBA’s Eastern Conference Coach of the Month. The Celtics are 14 and 2.  It makes total sense.  But Doc Rivers is no different than he was last year.  He’s still the same guy.  The only difference between Doc Rivers now, and Doc Rivers then, is the guys filling the jerseys sitting next ...

Tuesday Bucks Notes
Published 12/4/2007 by Alex <info@brewhoop.com> at Brew Hoop: Front Page Posts
Last week's losses stung, but it's a new week. And if this season has taught us anything it is that this team takes on a new identity, for better or worse, on a weekly basis. Also, Michael Redd, who got used to winning with Team USA over the summer and then helped vault the Bucks into first place, doesn't appreciate the recent losing, and isn't making any excuses.  SI.com's Chris Mannix writes about the up-and-down season. But they are relatively young and overwhelmingly inexperienced. Against the Knicks, the Bucks abandoned the fluid offense that helped them build a seemingly insurmountable lead and became an ...

Chilly weather, chilly team
Published 12/4/2007 by kambrothers at Lakers Blog
17 games into the season, the Lakers have shown they can beat anyone, and be beaten by anyone. Sound familiar? It's a patter the Lakers have been in for the last couple of seasons. Frustrating ones, if we've been taking the temperature of fans on this site in a reasonably accurate manner. Tonight, as the Lakers head into Minnesota to face a spectacularly awful Timberwolves team ( do not look directly at them, we beg you! ) L.A. had better be on the right end of the aforementioned equation. But given the number of injuries they're facing - Kwame Brown on the shelf, Ronny Turiaf out for at least this game after suffering ...

I have a long Abe Pollin post due up later tonight, but for now, a few links. The fact that December has fewer back-to-backs will help Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison.  Also in that article is the news that Abe is not letting Ernie go over the tax under any circumstances.  Too bad. Look who's 16th on the PER rankings. Brew Hoop is running weekly bloggers MVP/Rookie of the Year standings, and I participated (though I only really thought about it for five minutes).  If you're wondering where the Caron Butler MVP and Nick Young Rookie of the Year votes came from, ...

Week in Review: Mavs still have lots to prove
Published 12/10/2007 by Joe Boikess at Showboating
With most teams now having completed at least 20 games, the NBA season is now past the quarter-mile mark in the long, 82-game regular season marathon.  So far we the fans have learned a couple of things: the Spurs are still the team to beat, the Celtics’ new Big-3 can play together and do it very, very well, Dwight Howard is now the NBA’s most dominant big man (yes, even over Yao Ming), and his team is pretty good too.  Other surprises like the Lakers, Warriors and Hornets are all proving to be legitimate playoff teams in the West, while teams like the Pacers, Hawks and Bucks are better than advertised in the East. But as far as ...

Hard to believe we were the toast of the NBA at one point, isn't it? Over at Mavs Moneyball, Wes Cox weighs in on the (somewhat) controversial ruling that Keith Bogans' toe was on the three-point line on that big shot he hit late in the game last night: Pet Peeve note: If that shot happened in the 1st quarter, I have no doubt they would have counted it as a 3. The refs only pay attention to toes on lines in the final 2 minutes of games, and I have no idea why. Even Mavs fans think we might have gotten hosed. Oh well. Matt Watson asks, "Did the clock strike midnight in ...

Ramon Sessions continues to impress in Tulsa. The latest: he was named D-League Performer of the Week today, thanks in part to a monster triple double against the Austin Toros. This marks the second time this season Sessions has been honored as the league's top weekly player. He first won the honor after the opening week of the season. Mo Williams, the team's $ 52 million man, leads a crop of point guards having strong seasons in the Bucks' system. Williams is arguably having a career year, and backup Royal Ivey has performed admirably off the bench and in spot-starting roles. Even Charlie Bell has heated up after a ...
