Heyman: Yankees Like Lackey
The Yankee Universe —
From Jon Heyman:
The world champion Yankees have top free-agent pitcher John Lackey on their free-agent shopping list, sources said. The Yankees aren’t expected to be as aggressive this winter on the free market as last offseason and they haven’t firmed up all their plans as yet, but one league source said of Lackey, “He’s definitely on their radar.”
Word is that the Yankees probably will be willing to repeat A.J. Burnett’s $82.5 million, five-year contract for Lackey. Although, one person close to Lackey ...

... great column about the dumbest column of the year.
In case you weren’t aware, the Yanks had the highest payroll this season. Though Trey disagrees with me, there is no way there will ever be a salary cap in baseball unless there is huuuuuuuge TV deal for revenue sharing, like the NFL. You have to have a floor for players to agree, and the owners want to make money if they are still forced to pay high contracts.
Speaking of the Yankees salary – what’s another $100 million contract? Do it Cashman! Do it!

The Yankees and John Lackey -- a little more speculation
Pinstripe Alley —
IF the New York Yankees pursue an expensive free agent who did not just help them win a World Series -- and at this point that appears to be a big IF -- the early speculation is that their target will be Angels' starting pitcher John Lackey.

It's About The Money - A New York Yankees Blog —
Wow, that's a lame posting title, ain't it? Of course, when there's a GM's meeting, albeit brief and scaled-down at an airport hotel, there's a few dribs and drabs worth noting. Here's one, as I alluded to yesterday.
Yankees looking at Lackey
Word is that the Yankees probably will be willing to repeat A.J. Burnett's $82.5 million, five-year contract for Lackey. Although, one person close to Lackey -- whose offer to stay with the Angels this spring was for less than $40 million over three years on top of this year's $10 million salary -- indicated the longtime Angels right-hander sees himself in a higher echelon than ...
The Yankees would pay Lackey A.J. Burnett money
Circling The Bases —
[image] That's $82.5 million over five years, but according to SI's Jon Heyman , Lackey "sees himself in a higher echelon than Burnett." I think he's right to see himself that way. He's not as erratic as Burnett, and as Heyman notes in the article, the Yankees admire his toughness. Given the massive increase in revenue the Yankees realized after the new park opened, and given that the World Champions had to rely on a three man rotation in order to win the World Series -- with one of those men being the 37 year-old Andy Pettitte -- you have to figure that the Yankees have leaked out that $82.5 million figure as a starting point for Lackey, not a ceiling.
