Is the MLS getting more popular?   I have not heard that much about it where I live in Chicago.   I am still not sure why soccer never gets big-time in the US.     I think we like our sports home-grown--b-ball,NFL,NBA.

Chicago Fire has great support and does very well.

They sold out most of their matches last season, and they have a new stadium of their own, Toyota Park.  I think their average attendance is comparabe to both the Bulls and Blackhawks, and that is partly becasue they have a new superstar/millionaire player, and because they went far into the playoffs this time.

( The media there covers them well, and the players are as well known as many other local pros in other sports)

A few days ago, I wrote an original BallHype article about the growth and general popularity of soccer here; it included 10 points that relate to your question and comment.  It's still on BallHype, here -

to the dude in Chicago.  You seem like you'd like the Fire.  I am a supporter of that team.

They now have at least 20 official supporter groups, including one that existed before the team did. They have ladies and Latino groups as well as some from other states.

So that's another way to say Yes to popularity question.  Their website has also existed since before the team,

Chicago-Fire.com   Also, this MLS expansion blog looks like a good idea.  I am happy that Chicago Fire team and fans are such good examples for others to follow

See, that makes my point about their great support !

I looked on the team's site as you suggested, and those Fire supporters all have great names for their groups.

Everything from the Red Scare to the Barn Burners, Shandy Sisters, Section 8, and so many other great ones, too.

In MLS, I go for the Revs, but I won't deny that Fire has a good thing going.  Maybe we'll see you in the '08 East final !
