I Love Knuckleballers

The R.A. Dickey story is an odd one: A hard-throwing all-American pitcher at the University of Tennessee in 1996, Dickey became a first-round draft pick of the Texas Rangers and a starter for the United States Olympic team, along with Kris Benson, Billy Koch, Seth Greisinger and Braden Looper. Baseball America pictured the five of them standing side by side on the cover of its Olympic preview issue. Dickey was ready to accept the Rangers’ $810,000 bonus offer when a team physician picked up the magazine and noticed Dickey’s right arm hanging somewhat awkwardly at his side. The doctor recommended that the team examine him further, ...
And One Pitcher to Root For

As this guy gets closer to the majors there’s more written about his unique situation. Here’s a piece by the New York Times concerning R.A. Dickey, who recently came to the Mariners via Rule 5. His story is incredible.
Instead, Dickey slipped on his Seattle Mariners uniform Monday, stepped on a bullpen pitcher’s mound and made his pitching arm do something it should not be able to do — throw a baseball. He single-handedly ruined my fantasy team back in 2005 when he was with the Rangers and I actually believed his knuckleball was any good. But I'm not mad, especially since it states in that article that he does not have an ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Its the ligament that's typically replaced in tommy john surgery, and therefore he is immune to the condition ...
R.A. Dickey: Mariners savior, crab boat captain

R.A. Dickey is the only reason to watch the 2008 Seattle Mariners. Since the team has refused to don the powder blue road uniforms, Dickey's dancing 75-mile per hour knuckleball might be the next best reason to tune in. Watching the M’s boot ground balls and hit into rally-killing double plays is fun and all, but the 33-year old knuckleballer has been dazzling. Dickey came on in relief of starter Erik Bedard last night and posted 5-2/3 shutout innings. In his past three appearances he has pitched 13-1/3 scoreless innings. "I've never seen it like this before," catcher Jaime Burke told ...
