1999-2008, Rex Ryan had success as a defensive coach. In 1999, he took over as the defensive line coach, and in 2000, got a Super Bowl ring for one of the best single season defenses in NFL history. Ryan was the line coach from 1999-2004 and when defensive coordinator Mike Nolan left for a head coaching job, Ryan took over as the coordinator.
