RELATED: 2008 Scouting Combine Index Updated: 8 p.m. INDIANAPOLIS - So much for Darren McFadden dropping to the Bengals at No. 9. And after outrunning everyone but Barry Sanders and the scouts this past season, Kevin Smith finally got a foothold into the elite Sunday here at the NFL scouting combine on a day when, yes, speed mattered. Did 49ers Tamper With Justin Smith?
Published 2/25/2008 by Michael David Smith at FanHouse
Filed under: 49ers, Bengals, NFL Free Agency, Cincinnati, San FranciscoLast week FanHouse's Josh Alper wrote that the 49ers were being accused of tampering with Bears linebacker Lance Briggs. And now the 49ers may have done it again. The Bengals' official web site is carrying an item (via PFT) that quotes an unnamed source saying the 49ers and Bengals defensive end Justin Smith are close to a contract agreement and were "working on the deal last night." That, of course, would be tampering, as Smith ...

SMITH TO 49ERS?
Published 2/25/2008 by Mike Florio at ProFootballTalk.com
With four days to go until the explosion of 2008 free agency and plenty of scouts and agents in Indianapolis for the Scouting Combine, plenty of contract talks that shouldn’t be happening are happening. The result?  Rumors are flying that verbal deals — deals that clearly violate the tampering rules — already are in place. Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, citing an unnamed source, reports that the 49ers already are working on a contract for defensive end Justin Smith.  Last week, it was reported that the 49ers currently face tampering allegations regarding Bears linebacker Lance ...

Justin Smith and San Francisco working on a deal
Published 2/25/2008 by Kirkendall <info@cincyjungle.com> at Cincy Jungle: Front Page Posts
Bengals.com writer, Geoff Hobson, got word that the San Francisco 49ers and Justin Smith "were working on the deal last night". That's far more along than what the Bengals have been able to accomplish even though we keep hearing that the door isn't shut. It is. It was closed the moment the franchise tag was placed on Stacy Andrews. Heck, it could have been closed well before that.

Update On Potential Free Agent Signings
Published 2/25/2008 by Scott at Bucstats.com weblog
... The pass rush will probably not benefit from Justin Smith, who is said to be close to a deal with the 49ers. I didn't expect Smith to come to the Bucs, but it was nice thinking about it for a while. His contract is going to be outrageous and if the team is going to give out that kind of cash to one player, I'm pretty sure he'll be on the offense. ...

49ers already negotiating with Justin Smith?!?!
Published 2/26/2008 by Fooch <ninersnation@gmail.com> at Niners Nation: Front Page Posts
Call me crazy, but when you're under investigation for tampering in the free agent market, does it make sense for rumors to be flying that you're already working on a deal with Justin Smith?  To quote ...
