NFL Network to hire Bob Papa for its play-by-play gig

I don't know when the network is announcing this, but three people familiar with the situation said Wednesday that Papa would be the choice. Other candidates are believed to have included Spero Dedes - like ... [link]

NFLN HIRES PAPA FOR REGULAR-SEASON GAMES
Published 6/25/2008 by Mike Florio at ProFootballTalk.com
Neil Best of Newsday reports that NFL Network has hired Giants play-by-play announcer Bob Papa to handle the call for the eight regular-season games to be aired on the league-owned network. Papa replaces Bryant Gumbel, who was a half-click below dreadful during two seasons on the job.  Papa presumably will work with holdover Cris Collinsworth. We’d previously reported that NFLN had offered the job to Al Michaels of NBC, but that Michaels turned it down. Other finalists were Tom Hammond and Spero Dedes. Papa also co-hosts The Opening Drive on Sirius NFL Radio with Randy ...

Filed under: NFL Media Watch, NFL NetworkNeil Best of Newday is reporting that NFL Network has hired Bob Papa to handle play-by-play on its slate of eight regular-season games, replacing Bryant Gumbel as the top in-game broadcaster on the league-operated cable channel. By hiring Papa, NFL Network has basically gone the exact opposite route it went when it hired Gumbel: Papa is an old pro who has a firm understanding of the job but isn't well known outside New York; Gumbel is a big name who had no experience calling ...

NFL network hires Bob Papa as new PBP guy
Published 6/26/2008 by JasonB at Bleeding Green Nation: Front Page Posts
... His replacement is Giants' radio play by play guy Bob Papa. Papa, like the other leading candidates, certainly benefited from being a New York guy in close proximity to the NFL heads. That said, I think he's a good choice. I've listened to the Giants radio broadcasts and I've enjoyed Papa's commentary. He's never come across as a homer(I'm not sure he's even a Giants fan) unlike our beloved Merril Reese, and he's got a kind of throwback AM radio style delivery that ends up being very engaging to listen to. He'll certainly have to change his style a bit for TV, but ...
